Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
It’s summer and when people go on vacation, we like to mix things up a bit, with James off this week, we called on our friend and fellow podcaster John Yoo to sit in. That was a fortuitous choice as our guest is Mollie Hemingway, former Ricochet editor, Fox News contributor, and co-author the the best selling book Justice on Trial: The Kavanaugh Confirmation and the Future of the Supreme Court. We get the inside dope (yes, that’s the word) on Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing and the aftermath and lasting effects. Also, was Ronald Reagan a racist? And is Baltimore really that bad? We ask native son Rob Long for an answer.

Yeah, Mollie! Can’t wait to listen!
Is this a “hold my beer” meme?
“That was a fortuitous choice ” — No. It was a fortunate choice.
Mollie’s book is great! Glad to hear from her about it.
Howie Carr was tearing Kamala Harris apart on all of the tap dancing she does about policy. She obviously hasn’t studied it enough or thought about how she’s going to deal with it rhetorically. Then throw in the long Reason Magazine article about her actual prosecutor track record and her relationship to Willie Brown. Typical ruling class parasite.
Techie booboo — “Playback error.” My pod app, Pocket Casts, says this epi’s format appears to be one it can’t play. Previous episodes always played beautifully on Pocket Casts.
Delete the file and re-download it.
Fixed! Thanks
The key issue is, does Rob – for one example – believe that “moderate” Joe Biden should win in 2020, because Trump, regardless of Gorsuch and Kavanaugh and all the rest, is just too “loathsome” to be president?
This is an excellent question for John “But Gorsuch” Woo and all of NeverTrump: will your fear and loathing of PDT make you back Slow Joe (or whoever the Dem nominee is) or will you “hold your nose” like so many of us had to for McCain and Romney previously?? 2020 is shaping up to make or break the Republican party. The “Even McMullin” dodge isn’t an option this time around folks. Either you stand with Trump or the party goes the way of the Whigs.
And beyond that too, will Rob – and the others – actually step up and vote for Trump this time? Or will they keep complaining and turning up their nose and wait for the rest of us to do it for them, again? What happens if it fails this time? It sure won’t be MY fault. But I’m quite ready to blame Rob if it happens.
another enjoyable podcast
And what Peter was saying near the end, including about Truman etc, why in the world shouldn’t that kind of reasoning apply to Trump? Even Rob doesn’t seem to believe that, although there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that Trump is anywhere near as bad as Truman or the others.
And what is Peter suggesting, starting at about 50 minutes? That Trump needs to have a “fireside chat” to explain what his plan is for North Korea? And then what, have a popular vote – or maybe an Electoral College vote – to decide if Trump gets to continue that plan or not?
Baloney.
And what does it matter if “nobody knows” the names of those at the top of the Defense Dept etc? How likely is it that MOST people EVER know who those people are? Or is it just supposed to be significant that PETER doesn’t know their names?
Boo-hoo. And, Piffle. It can’t be that difficult to find out who those people are, if someone thinks it’s important to know. Maybe the big mistake is relying on the anti-Trump media to provide that information as a matter of course without requiring any effort.
As is often pointed out, the term “racist” has become increasingly meaningless—and ought to be seen as problematic to begin with. Firmly held belief in the genetic superiority of one set of human beings over another is rare. Even the Nazis played cynical games with the concept. Taking it for granted that Culture A is to be preferred to Culture B and C is so common as to be a virtual norm, whatever pretentious (and often woefully ignorant) “multi-culturalists” may claim. When I was young, that is, when Ronald Reagan was still the host of General Electric Theater, most of Black Africa was still under colonial rule, and even if that was coming to an end, the notion of “civilizing the savages” was hardly out of fashion. (And there was more than a little “savagery” that accompanied the process of decolonization, as was seen, for example, in the Belgian Congo and Kenya.) As Peter Robinson says, not even Ronald Reagan could entirely transcend his times. And yet as PR knows from his own personal experience. RR was a remarkably good man of his times. And he is still missed.
No offense to Rob Long or John Yoo but I doubt they’re going to have any impact on the next election. What’s up with the obsession with the 10 or so Never Trumpers pundit types? 99.9% of voters don’t read Max Boot or Jen Rubin. Only a few political nerds read political web sites. There’s always a bunch of “Danger Will Robinson” types who make every election a make or break election. The end is nigh I tells ya!! I wouldn’t sleep well knowing this deeply flawed president is the single thread holding the Republican party and our republic together. It’s really that dire? Maybe I’m naive. This is a party that survived the trials and tribulations of Richard Millhouse Nixon. It actually gained seats since then. Popularity of parties ebbs and flows. The goal of any political party is survival and power and they’ll make adjustments for these goals. Believe it or not we will in the future have a Democrat president. If our republic is so fragile and crumbles because of that then we’re already screwed.
Look up O’Sullivan’s Law. That damn ACA is the perfect Cloward and Piven maneuver, too.
The bureaucracy, the media, and all of education is 90% pro-statist. Everything moves left all of the time and those guys really have their hooks sunk in.
I’m not sure if Rob is registered to vote in California or New York these days, but both states are going Democrat in 2020 regardless of how Rob casts his ballot.
Blue state Republicans should get out there and vote because the Democrats use the Constitutionally meaningless “popular vote” to try to discredit the elected Republican President.
In addition, the won’t-vote-for-Trumpers can have an effect on others too. Even if Rob doesn’t bother voting personally, it would be better for the country and the world for him to SAY that he will vote for Trump. And that others should too, because the alternative is President Slow Joe, or President Warren, or maybe even President Hillary.
Hmmm. Instead of ‘thumbs up’ shouldn’t it have been the ‘ok’ sign since
you’rewe’re all part of the vast right-wing conspiracy? Interesting tidbit about Senator Feinstein. How much do the ‘staff’ lead both elected and unelected (I’m thinking of Mueller) around?Really enjoyed the interview with Mollie. It’s refreshing even if they don’t agree with her, it can be light hearted as opposed to some of the podcast hosts who view the Federalist and all therein with such derision.
Who are these podcast hosts of which you speak? Fake conservatives?
