In Need of an Unbiased Machine

The gang cover so much ground this week, ChatGPT would have a hard time putting together a description! Our first guest is North Dakota’s senior Senator John Hoeven. He describes his recent trip to the border, weighs in on collapsing banks, and assess the upcoming primary for the Grand Ole Party. Next John Yoo stops by on his way to McDonalds to explain the scandal laid out in the Durham Report.

The hosts also get into actual reefer madness, creative AI and the pickup scene on the screenwriter’s picket line.

Song of the Week:

  • Soundbite is from Ted Cruz’s comments at the border.

No member of the FBI will pay a price and the FBI will live another day to harass parents at PTA meetings, Latin-mass Catholics, pro-lifers and of course, protect Biden Inc.

All I hear from the Senator is “Blah, blah, blah.” We need to win the Senate and Presidency in 2024. Why? What are you going to do with it? We had everything in 2016 and the Decorum Cons refused to work with Trump. What’s the plan to ensure fair elections so there isn’t a repeat of 2020?

And even if there is a fair election and Trump wins again, THEN what do they plan to do?

You weren’t paying attention. Senator Hoeven said several times that there are very important issues, and that it’s very important to listen to voters’ very important thoughts about their very important concerns about those very important issues!

    Very important.

Republicans have solutions! It’s very important to let voters know that those unspecified solutions are very important to those very important voters’ concerns about their very important thoughts that it is very important for the Senator to address.

    “Blah, blah, blah” indeed.

    Hhmph.

(I gave up on the flagship Ricochet podcast years ago, but tend to listen when Steve Hayward fills in and/or John Yoo is a guest. They didn’t salvage this episode.)

Some comments on the life expectancy topic. Yes, life expectancy in the US went down over the last few years. It’s not unprecdented – life expectancy in the US went down from 1942 to 1945. Why? WW2 killed a lot of Americans. It went up quite a bit starting in 1946. It went down over the last few years due to COVID. The life expectancy for a given year assumes nothing will change in the future. Obviously, we have treatments for COVID and so mortality from it has dropped.

As for death rates among the young, there are a bunch of causes. I have a friend that is an actuary that studies death rates and causes in the US for professional reasons, with literally billion dollar decisions being made based on the research by her team. She has a substack where she does deep dives into the death certificate data that the CDC compiles from reports from the states (and the states get it from the local coroners and physicians). There are a bunch of factors causing an uptick in deaths in kids (18 and under), here is her analysis. https://twitter.com/meepbobeep/status/1658781614166401024

    Her substack is https://marypatcampbell.substack.com/
The substack has a lot of deep dives into death rates (and public pensions).

The senator from North Dakota was an absolute nothing-burger.   Platitudes and talking points.   He and mitch mcconnell should be best buds.

I love how sanguine everyone was during the Durham discussion.  Our country circles the toilet and no one can even feign anger.   It displayed how the right has been conditioned by the left to have zero expectations and be proud of miniscule/meaningless wins (yeah!  We still have our guns and we have been reinstated on twitter!)

I meant at the end, Mr. Davis. Not the intro, at which James has excelled. Now we get only commercials at the end. That’s OK, but the outro used to be so enjoyable. I miss it.

Oh, the outro.  I don’t think Ricochet has ever had “bumper music.”  Which goes around ad breaks.  I don’t remember when the outro stopped, but it might have been something that had to be done in order for easy attachment of ads.  When they switched to the ad-supported podcast platform, whatever they use.

That’s also when the podcast files started getting names like bf78aff4-dd65-5db5-803e-832880ea5952.mp3 instead of 3_martini_lunch_5_19_23.mp3

Are you claiming that “bumper music” includes outro, but not intro?  Because there is still intro, which if that is part of “bumper music,” then “bumper music” is still present, which is why I asked for clarification.

Mr . Hill covered it some months ago. If I remember correctly, it’s a concern with copyright scrubbers finding a snippet of a song, reporting it to the hosting service, and stopping downloads. Sure they can appeal by claiming fair use, but it takes time and in the meantime there’s no ad revenue.

I think it was around the time a musician died and no music was shared when the discussion occurred to help a search for the discussion.

Do you know when that was, relative to the podcasts being hosted elsewhere, which seems to be the case now?  And the podcast host attaches ads based on location, which is why I get ads in French when my VPN routes me through France.  And is why the filenames are so weird now.

    Young Frankenstein is better.

I won’t knock you for preferring Young Frankenstein Miffed, but Blazing Saddles was groundbreaking, was more original than Young Frankenstein, and included several original musical numbers composed by Mel Brooks himself, including both the theme song and Lili von Shtupp’s smash hit “I’m Tired.”

More importantly, I’m dismayed that the readership of this post has given only 1 “like” to Blazing Saddles and no likes at all to Young Frankenstein.  Ricochetti, you have homework to catch up on.
