Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
This week, we’re fortunate to have two giants of America political punditry: the Washington Examiner’s Michael Barone and Hillsdale College professor (and Ricochet contributor) Paul Rahe. They opine on the current state of races across the country, and an early line on 2016. But before that, a deep dive on the current state of the Secret Service, take on Ricochet member TeamAmerica’s query Foreign Policy President Needed: Any Republicans Qualified? Also, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and whether or not we ought to be worried about Ebola in the good old USA.
Music from this week’s episode:
Don’t Stop by Fleetwood Mac
The opening sequence for the Ricochet Podcast was composed and produced by James Lileks.
Release the hounds, EJHill.

Excellent photographic evidence of our hosts’ athleticism (for which they are so renowned.)
Is anyone else finding that all their subscribed podcast feeds in itunes are broken?
I have nit seen any other reports of this, MFM. Please PM me or write us at support@ricochet.com and we’ll get it figured out for you.
A tan suit? Me? After Labor Day? Tan?
EJ, how could you?
It’s all about competence, Peter, all about competence.
How appropriate is it to refer to your guests as “giants of American political punditry”?
Both gentlemen were confident that Mitt Romney would beat President Obama and both wrote some very fervent pieces, shortly before the election, to illustrate their reasoning for that confidence.
I’m sure they have some good analysis on many of the “current races across the country” but you may be wise to cast your net wider when looking for “an early line on 2016”.
I use podget on Linux, which uses the direct link from the main podcast page and am having trouble as well. If I click on the link from there I get a Temporary Connection error page.
Sent an email, Yeti. Yeah, it’s all the feeds at the moment.
Schlichter and Kruiser and Katz (oh my!) probably got Tobasco sauce on the server.
My own comments about this, re: ground chuck, can be found here:

James Lileks, the comments are specifically in response to a comment of yours, you are cordially invited to visit and respond.
Wth!? How did the good people who play Magic: The Gathering get lumped in that pretentious nimrod!?
If I was on a full keyboard instead of just my iPhone, I swear upon the altar of God that I would rip Rob a new corn chute!
Will the 2016 Republican include in his/her campaign the theme “restoring competence” and “cleaning house?” Likely a lot of what’s gone on in the IRS, for example, will still be within the statue of limitations.
Will the media press the Democratic candidate on what she/he will do to restore competence and run to earth anyone who broke the law (OK, egregiously broke the law) in the previous administration?
This isn’t showing up in my iTunes, are their any bugs with this?
I’m with you Fred Cole! I play Magic as well and I’m no left-winger!
Thank you to Paul Rahe for mentioning why the GOP is struggling.
They do not stand for anything, that is, other than saying the words “Reagan”, “Founding Fathers”, “Constitution”, “Obama”, in random order.
Any steps to prevent the spread of Ebola might, MIGHT, offend someone perceived to be in the minority and as we know liberals would ( quite literally in this case) rather die than do that. At least they don’t mind if you die.
The problem with the Tyson thing and others like it is that when the claim is made that (insert conservative name here) said such and such a thing it can’t be refuted without checking and by that time it’s too late, the lie has gone around the world three times. I’ve noticed that conservatives are often stunned by this technique , Biden is especially adept at it.
As Bill Whittle says ‘ it’s easy to destroy someone of honesty and integrity if you have none of your own’
The audio keeps cutting out after about 8 minutes. I have to keep refreshing the page and finding my place… Mac/Chrome
We are experiencing an issue with iTunes in which some shows (including this one) are not showing up in iTunes. We expect to have this resolved by 12PM PT. In the meantime, please subscribe to the Super Feed to receive all of our shows in iTunes. Directions here.
Lileks at 32:20: “Is the narrative on the left going to be that the failure is due to an insufficient application of these ideas?”
Exactly. Like for the Stimulus.
Here’s what my reply to that narrative looks like:
On the off chance you don’t already know this, the podcast troubles are not just an iTunes problem. I use BeyondPod (android) and all my Ricochet feeds (but none of the others) failed to update this morning. I get the following error message:
I don’t know enough about this to know if that info is helpful, but figured it couldn’t hurt to throw in.
Update: Podcast feeds should now be working. Apologies for the inconvenience.
Hooray! Government don’t work good, but Blue Yeti does!
James, you need to brush up on those segues. Even Rob, Rob!, saw that one coming a mile off. Try some segue push ups before next week.
Courtesy of James Lileks, himself:
Anyone know a link to the football editorial Lileks was talking about? I googled a bit for it, but no go.
I believe it’s here.
Didn’t Shinseki resign? I thought he was the first in the O administration.
Yeti, don’t you guys have some sort of Skype visual going on there? Is there a secret hand signal that James can throw up?
Hah! Well, you know. I was trying to create a word picture.
We have a live text chat going on during the show, but we don’t use video. Too much of a bandwidth hog.
P.S. Don, we will be bringing back the live stream in a few weeks.
That’s Vol. 5 Number XXXVI.
