Hello faithful Ricochet Podcast listeners. It’s us. We have another show for you. It’s a good one. We have Ricochet Editor and Twitter celebrity Bethany Mandel sitting in for Rob Long. We have the WSJ’s Jason Riley as a guest. We have political strategist to the stars, Luke Thompson as the other guest. We also discuss aliens and Ricochet member Kephalithos wins this week LPoW for the very intriguing post American Architectural Geography: Part 1, Timing. It’s a good show. You should listen. And tell your friends. Because we want more listeners.

The problem with the U, is its a perception of the observer. A lot of observers dont know jack about jack.

I was thinking of Navy and Air Force pilots to be specific.

True, pilots are at least trained observers, and they know what they don’t know. I would take the word of even a civil pilot over that of a random…

Even pilots, including military pilots, are still human bean’s and subject to idiocy no matter how well trained they might be in certain areas. For one example, remember that guy Jonah Goldberg sometimes mentions, who believed in the mole people or lizard people or whatever it was, living inside the Earth. He was a former Secretary Of Defense or something.

Yes, he believed they where down there. He never observed them. You do have a point, crackpots come in all flavours. (My flavour needs a U! not giving into Americanisms on that one) Discounting the fantastic tales, I would take the observations of a pilot – especially a seasoned, experienced pilot – over the random driving home late one night…

You’re likely right, but here’s my source.

Military pilots have been known to sneak up on an air liner with all lights off and flash their dome light on and off …

PR says something on this podcast that is a myth of upper middle class people – that stay at home moms are a luxury good.  Just a few years ago my wife stayed at home with children while I made below the median income in the US and we had no problems.  Like everything it’s a trade off.  If you cannot live without vacations to Europe, a summer home, the newest cars than yes, you cannot afford to be a stay at home mother.  But if you just want to live a normal life its easy.

Related – Bethany Mandel says that the virus and lockdowns will force many moms to quit their jobs and stay home with their kids.  If this is actually true I just joined team virus and pro-lockdowns.  Thats the most pro-civilization development in years.

The pod concept is actually common in India which has free education so bad the poorest parents form their own schools and hire teachers.  There is an EconTalk podcast about it and it functions almost exactly as described here.

Parents who want kids to succeed find solutions.  The US teachers unions have actually done an amazing job blunting the wishes of parents for generations.

Minnesota is the worst state in the union for Black people.

Reminds me of this from 2009:

Which state is smarter Wisconsin or Texas?

    State ACT/SAT rankings: Texas, 47th; Wisconsin, 2nd.

However, Texas beats Wisconsin in 17 of the 18 listed statistical categories.

I had no idea IowaHawk was a race realist…

This same logic actually applies to world comparisons.  American blacks are some of the highest performing in the world, our Asians do as well or better than other Asians, and our whites do about average for whites.  I think our Hispanics are among the highest performing Hispanics in the world.

As I recall, the same kind of reasoning applies to life spans: Norwegian Americans live longer than Norwegians in Norway, Japanese Americans live longer than Japanese in Japan, African Americans live longer than Africans in Africa, etc.

It sheds a light on who really has the best healthcare system.
