Conventional Thinking

It’s the Republican National Convention week, or as pundits on the right call it — Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, and whatever other major holiday you want to thrown in there. We break it all down: the pluses, the minus, the hits and the misses. And we make some predictions for the next couple of months. As you’re hear, we recorded this show on Zoom in front of an audience of our beloved Ricochet members. We’ll be doing a few more of these on Zoom before the election, so if you’d like to participate, join us!

Music from this week’s show: Street Fighting Man by the Rolling Stones

I seem to recall that Claire Berlinski was referenced on this podcast. In case anybody’s interested, she’s in rare form right now on Twitter. Wow. lol

She’s been living in france way too long, and has “gone native.”

I really don’t see how you can expect conservatism or libertarianism to sell or even work under these conditions:

And Turkey before that, right? When did she last live in the US?

I think someone said it’s been at least 20 years now.

Just the name puts me off.  As they sometimes say on Monty Python, “Oh what a giveaway!”  Couldn’t she change it to NewYorkski or Philadelphiaski or something?

Yes, that kind of stuff is also reminiscent of how the left and others fight and sue and obstruct over capital punishment, and then argue that it should be banned because it takes too long.

It’s the same with the construction of nuclear power plants. These plants take years to build, so lawsuits which stall bringing them on line drive up the cost. Then they turn around and say, “Nuclear energy is too expensive!”

Yes, nuclear power is expensive to begin with, but making it more expensive doesn’t do anyone any favors . . .

And it needn’t be that expensive to start with, if they’d use less nuclear-weapon-type technology and not demand construction by what amounts to the local plumber’s union.

Uh . . . commercial plants don’t use nuclear weapons technology. However, the left loves to imply “there’s a nuclear bomb being built ten miles from your city” . . .

I referred to nuclear-weapon-TYPE technology. Nuclear power plants can be designed and built around much less high-temperature/high-pressure levels of operation than we’ve seen up to now.

I’m sorry, but it’s not even the same type. The only common technology is enrichment. Commercial power plants have nowhere near the same enrichment as nuke weapons. As for pressure-temperature operating parameters, commercial nuclear plants still have no connection to nuclear weapons. Nuke weapons explode, they don’t “operate.”

Perhaps I’ve misunderstood the basis for your comment.

Nuclear Energy is very green and very reliable.

    And very safe

I (humbly) consider myself to have been ahead of the curve when it comes to Claire Berlinski.  While she was still being invited on podcasts and commenting on Ricochet, I remember thinking occasionally “she really doesn’t know what she is talking about” or “that’s an odd viewpoint for someone theoretically a conservative or at least lucid”.  So it seems those early signs were symptoms of a downward spiral?  I stopped listening or reading her long ago, so this is based on recent comments by others.  Lots of cats, right?

Nothing wrong with cats.  But living in Europe or even Asia for 20 years or more, while trying to opine lucidly on US politics etc, is…. problematic?

This is some brutal criticism of people that think like Berlinsky, including the ones that aren’t totally whacked out. This gets over my head, but even if you are a neocon or anything related to that  it makes no sense to try to get Biden into office. @JedBabbin who is always excellent. The file is 12 minutes, but the interview is 10 minutes total.

At the end he makes the perfect observation “This is a cry for relevance.” Their lifestyles and ego depend on a certain view of global initiatives and how government is dysfunctional or not. They just can’t bear to look at the reality of why things have  changed so much. If the tea party actually worked, it would be a different situation, but even then most of those guys are against that.

Now she just effectively warned everyone that she’s going to go all out total cat lady until the day after the election. Her recommendation is to mute her if you can’t handle it. I think there is some self-awareness still available. lol

the grating personality with bad policy (McCain)

You cannot–ever–get anybody to explain in plain English how John McCain moved the ball forward for libertarians or conservatives.

There was nothing constructive about his ACA vote. 100% terrible. That’s what got my attention. Now his old lady is trying to get Republicans to vote for Biden. This is insane.

McCain gave the bogus, poison dossier to David Ignatius.  McCain could not have believed it [the contents of the dossier]. Hard to believe that he’d let that poison go into the American media; and four years later we’re still not done with it.

The first half is more about the Obama deep state and then the second half is about McCain.

Further magnifying my shame for voting for McCain (not that I had a practical alternative).

I voted against Obama. Unfortunately, McCain was the closest thing to a viable alternative.

We wouldn’t be in this mess if every central banker in the Western countries read the riot act to their politicians about the deflation from automation and globalized trade.
