Buying Greenland?

Hey, don’t laugh — we could do it (and another President reportedly thought about it too). So yes, we discuss that, a troubled Congressional trip to the Holy Land, the great Kevin Williamson on his new book The Smallest Minority: Independent Thinking in an Age of Mob Politics, and the WSJ’s Bill McGurn on the turmoil in Hong Kong (he knows the city well — he lived for ten years. Also, how did the name Ricochet come to land upon this blessed website? You’ll have to tune in for the answer to that one.

So there’s a reason I’ve noticed Kevin referring to “we” a few times lately.

The Russian thing sounds like Project Pluto. Project Orion is a fascinating idea that enamored me when I was a teenager.

Greenland?  I wonder how long before China and Russia try to annex or Crimea-ize parts of Antarctica…

Peter needs to consistently finish his sentences, rather than stopping mid-word assuming that everyone knows what he was going to say.  It may be true sometimes, but not always.  Best to say your words yourself, Peter.

You might need to get James Lileks a science podcast, but I don’t know with whom he should do a podcast.  The Harvard Lunch Club podcast doesn’t seem to be around anymore unless they are taking the entire summer off.

Let him do a Jay Nordlinger-type Q&A podcast, interviewing smart science-type people every week.  It would have to be a pure fun project though as I think Lileks is busy with lots of other things.  Partner with StarTribune.com or NRO maybe?

It would have been PeterAndRob’sCrackerBarrel.com but the price on that was half a mil.

I did two postings in Beijing. The situation in Hong Kong is, and always has been, hopeless. China doesn’t mess around. I fully expect Tianmen Square Part II any time now.

I agree with @peterrobinson that we need a cold state in the Atlantic to balance off Alaska in the Pacific, but one arctic state on each side would be too “matchy-matchy.”

    Let’s buy Iceland too!

Now, all we need is a slogan.

How about: “51 and 52… nobody remembers Tipecanoe!”

On a related note – a little flightless bird told me that @roblong missed today’s episode because he is summering in the north Atlantic, swanning  (penguining?) around Reykjavik and sunning himself 18 hours a day on a volcanic beach.

    The hamptons are for suckers.

I’ve been in both Hong Kong and Shanghai a few times this year. Both fascinating for different reasons.

I have employees in HK and worry about them. One of them once told me that all of HK’s water comes from up the peninsula in PRC and all the PLA would have to do is close the spigot.

    Helmsman Shaving Cream?

I wouldn’t have named it that.  I would be afraid people might start shaving with Hellmann’s Mayonnaise…

Curious to hear a dedicated truth-teller like Kevin Williamson give such an elliptical account of his firing from The Atlantic.

I think the only things Denmark does for Greenland are the military and foreign relations.

I’m not an expert on this, but populated North America is only a two hour flight to populated Greenland. In the past you had to fly to Europe first because there were no flights, even though Greenland was in the “North American Trading Zone.”

It’s been awhile since we’ve expanded. Obama was the first President, and so far only, to serve under the same flag under which he was born. Trump was born before 1959 and the DNC seems to be choosing a challenger just as old. We need a new state before 2024.

If other people left out the real reasons he was fired, that might be considered polite. From him, however, it might be considered misleading.

    Baja California, to balance Florida.

Or we can wait for rising sea levels to solve the problem …

Speaking for myself only, Super high quality shave cream allows me to get by with super cheap disposable blades. I really like that system. I also use face soap that is supposed to improve shaving.

This is just my opinion, but I think what Kevin was saying was people need to move away from poorly governed locales instead of trying to vote for someone one, two, or three levels up that will fix it. That is not the same thing as voting against bad Federal policy, cultural marxism, and our kleptocratic financial system.

I wish some sugar daddy would pay Kevin Williamson to take six months off to tear apart the ACA, the insurance system, and all of the cartels in the health business.

I like the alternate histories where the confederacy wins and their map includes some of the Mexican states and/or Cuba.
