Jonah gratefully drags a harried Niall Ferguson onto the show, which begins with Angela Merkel and ends with “copious quantities of claret.” Listen to Jonah and Niall — mostly Niall, of the Mellifluous Voice — speak in tongues, lament the destruction of critical thinking in universities, and sneak in a jab at Woodrow Wilson [dun dun dun].

I’m hoping all is well with Dr. Sowell. I’m getting a bit concerned.

Yes, I agree. I was hoping they would assure us of Dr. Sowell’s reason for absenting himself. I wish him well in any case.

I wonder if Jonah drew blood as he bit hard on his tongue when Niall said “… Trump is re-elected…”

I haven’t known how to feel about Niall Ferguson since the Brexit vote.

Being against Brexit and being a fan of David Cameron — and after the 2010 and 2015 elections? Well, Theresa May and now Boris Johnson perhaps haven’t been much better…

However, this quote was a winner and one of the best quotes of the year:

“I feel that way about international organizations the way woke people feel about statues.”

I’m convinced he just likes saying the word, “Schumpeter.”

All is well with Tom and we expect he will be on Jonah’s show in the very near future. My thanks to Niall for sitting in for Tom and not making me beg him too much. 😄

@jonahgoldberg I think your idea about ceding vs. not ceding institutions to the left (especially educational establishments) needs an entire episode. I read this the other day and I would love to hear your analysis of it:

    https://newdiscourses.com/2020/07/race-baiters-checkmate-critical-collapse-education/?fbclid=IwAR11EjI35gUu7udelUKux0JlKiSL-_1XayVF8Xccn8CEHqcIPd9Pm2D1k5M

“The claims of leftist educators about instilling an appreciation of other cultures are a thin veneer covering a deep-seated hatred of the West. The end-state of the left is not the replacement of Western culture with a preferable foreign alternative, but merely the destruction the existing order of things. They have no foreign cultural or philosophical heritage which they would prefer to see rise in the West. Cultural Marxism and postmodernism are themselves uniquely Western contrivances. This war is an internal one. The wounds are self-inflicted. The civilizational death will be a suicide.”

I think this is where we are. The question is now what do we do about it?
