Join Jonah on today’s episode of The Remnant with our first-time guest: CBS’s John Dickerson. The subjects included in John’s latest book, The Hardest Job in the World, will allow you to get a fix of incredible nerdiness about presidential history in equal proportion to your daily recommended dosage of rank punditry. Why is it that we’ve made the presidency, in John’s words “essentially an impossible job”? Another shock: Many of the parts of presidential decorum that we consider par for the course are actually pretty ahistorical, and John makes the case that this weird, patristic view of the presidency in which the Executive has to appear in person at every important going-on throughout the country actually erodes some of the prudential, quiet, considered principles meant to undergird the job. Oh, and there’s some mutual Wilson-bashing in store as well, which is always a bonus.

Show Notes:

John’s book, The Hardest Job in the World: The American Presidency

Franklin’s final speech at the Constitutional Convention

Theodore Roosevelt and “scientific management”

FDR flying into Chicago to accept the nomination in person

Bill Bennett’s Book of Virtues

What a load of nonsense. The halcyon days that Jonah pines for never existed and are never coming. Democrats have no principles. Never had any. There is only winning. Therefore Republicans have no choice. And there are tangible rewards to Republicans winning. Peace deals in the middle east, good judges, good economy and less intrusion into my personal life. Nothing good happens with Democrats. Nothing good will happen with Biden whether he is or was a centrist and a moderate makes no never mind! The man is addled!

Compare what Jonah calls McConnell’s hypocrisy to the Democrats flipping rules whenever it is convenient and their behavior when it comes to hearings for judges and I have to roll my eyes!

You can make all the deals you want with Democrats and it won’t matter at all. They will still do whatever they want and smugly say “We won”.

You were right, Jonah, when you wrote Liberal Facism. You have either lost your way or can’t get TV spots unless you paint a rosy picture about Democrats.

    Please stop it.

I keep reminding myself that Jonah was the author of that excellent book, and keep trying to cut him some slack for his actions now. I am woefully lacking in any residual slack left to cut him.

Jonah believes that the Dems were “holding their fire” during the Kavanaugh hearings.

    Unbelievable.

Was this the episode where Jonah claimed that one of the great conservative victories since the 80s has been the advance of free speech rights?

    Again, unbelievable.
