Referencing Mr. Douthat’s comments around 13 minutes in, I don’t know what you are talking about. I listen to the president’s speeches, and I have never heard him say anything about Jews, Eyetalians, or any other group. Just because Don Lemon says the president is clearly a racist, it does not make him an actual racist.

Show me the specific racist comments you are talking about, or stop this foolish unsubstantiated gossip and slander.

His comments about illegals immigrants are not racial. He has specifically supported legal immigration of people of all “races” and ethnic backgrounds, as long as they come here legally with something to offer the country.

Perhaps in your defense you would say that you were only referencing what traditionally nativist racially charged race-baiters would say, not necessarily the president specifically.

This conversation does not make me think of either one of these two gentlemen as Rangers, but rather as people who have looked into the palantir controlled by the enemy, and have been deceived in all they perceive as a result.

@CB Toder aka Mama Toad: Hear. Hear. I think if the President spent all his time saying I’m not racist, sexist, etc, that would be all he spent his time doing which is what the so-called progressives want. I do wish that Jonah and other conservatives would spend more time being critical of the so-called progressives instead of the President, other conservatives, etc.

I find Trump to be racially tinged about illegal immigrants and I find his bemoaning the lack of legal immigrants from Norway to be stupid and racial.

He has also said he wants to holt all immigration from certain countries and of people with certain ethnic backgrounds regardless of whether they come here legally of have something to offer the country. He frequently contradicts himself.

I don’t think Jonah or Ross said that. But Lemon is certainly useful to Trump as is most of the media.

Give me the quote, or don’t waste my time with baseless allegations.

I don’t think you can, because I don’t think he has said that.

And one more thing, I just want to point out to these two gentlemen (I know, I know these guys never read the comments, but I thought I’d try) that it is not the good and virtuous Frodo, or Sam, or Gandalf, or Aragorn who saves Middle Earth.

It is Gollum, who with his treachery and greed and lust for the Ring, saves Middle Earth.

Frodo would have failed without Gollum.

    Something to think about!

He said it during the campaign but I suppose you think that doesn’t count.

“total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”

Interesting discussion, indeed fascinating to listen in as a couple of really smart and well educated guys do what Democrats aren’t doing, which is try to figure out what they got wrong. First time I heard Trump described as a war time President, where the enemy are the Democrats, brilliant. However, they remain in a media bubble, where they take as fact media characterizations of Trump. He isn’t the conservative policy wonk we wanted but neither is he the racist, anti semitic he’s been described as. He just isn’t. He isn’t signaling to the white tribe, he’s signaling to folks who feel they’re getting the short end and there are lots of them in both parties. While many of those people have not diagnosed the problems they face correctly neither have Trump’s critics. Trump hasn’t either, so I guess it’s a level playing and field and the question is who will learn more quickly. I’m betting on Trump with Goldberg a close second and minorities who are not in privileged positions coming along quickly. As to the left they never learn because their one note periodically works wonders for them, just not for everybody else.

So, he wants immigration from countries with an abundance of terrorism halted until said immigrants can be effectively vetted. Gee, a policy that would serve our nation’s rational interests. Clearly Trump is a racist monster.

Islam is not a race and Muslims come in all shapes and races and most terrorists have been Muslims who take their Islam seriously, so figuring out whether we should bring in bunches without knowing who they are is simply not a racist tinged policy it’s rational and sensible. The illegals who walk here are mostly Mexicans and Central Americans, those aren’t races either, so you could say he’s against the violent gangs, or unskilled workers when our own low skilled workers are struggling or on welfare. Most if not all M-16 are Salvadorans, which isn’t a race either, they’re even different racially and culturally from those who walk here from Mexico most of whom are indigenous Americans and Spanish is their second language. Salvadorans are mostly hispanics, which isn’t a race it’s a language cultural group and incredible diverse. One must try to resist getting ones sound bites from the dominant media or organized interest who make their living off these issues. The media folks are ignorant biased and dishonest and the organized hispanic groups know what their doing, but you shouldn’t believe anything they say. I know I’m being condescending and you well know all this, but then don’t say silly things.

Frodo saved Middle Earth by having mercy on Gollum. Frodo could have killed Gollum, but he did not. It was undeserved mercy that saved Middle Earth.

    @11:42 – 12:14:

“… you [Trump]’re winning white working class voters by spending all your time talking about you know, how there’s, you know, voter fraud in the inner cities that’s, you know, stealing their votes, and black athletes are kneeling for the national anthem, and all this stuff that Trump does that I think is, you know, explicitly intended … to stoke racial division.”

Explicitly? EXPLICITLY? Are you sure you know what “explicitly” means?

Hey Jonah – why didn’t you call out Ross Douthat, longtime writer for both National Review and the New York Times for such a boner?

Frankly, at this point the only explanation for the persistent anti-Trumpism that was on display in this podcast – and in Bret Stephens’ columns, and in George Will’s columns, and in practically everything printed at the Weekly Standard these days, is dishonesty. Ross Douthat knows what explicitly means, and he intentionally misused it to insult Trump.

The anti-Trumpism of Jonah Goldberg and Ross Douthat is dishonesty.

    Fake news.

Breaks my heart while at the same time it chaps my butt. Jonah is a gifted writer and a brilliant intellectual. He ought not resort to dishonesty, or being an accessory to dishonesty. The moral preening of Jonah’s anti-Trumpism will drive me away completely. His colleagues Jay Nordlinger and Mona Charen have already convinced me to cease supporting National Review.

    “racially tinged.”

    What a weaselly phrase.

Worthy of the New York Times.

    Bleah.
