Jay’s latest guest is Daniel Hannan, the British politician and writer. There is an election coming up in the U.K. Jay asks about that, and a lot more.
Why are there so many writers — and crack writers, such as Hannan — in British politics? Is Hannan British or English? Or both?
What are conservatives to think of David Cameron, the Conservative leader? How red is “Red Ed” Miliband, the Labour leader?
Why do the British, in most every political camp, revere the National Health Service? Why do they tolerate, or welcome, a dominant BBC, generation after generation?
What about the Queen? Is London the capital of the world? Finally, what is conservatism?
A talk with Daniel Hannan (follow him on Twitter) is like a seminar in true and important things.

Thanks a lot, Mr. Nordlinger, I’m looking forward to listening to this. h/t Mr. Yeti-
If dreams could come true, Mr. Hannan would become a U.S. citizen and run for governor of California with James of E as campaign manager.
We could use another ‘radical’ British Invasion. :)
They are crack writers because first they are crack speakers, thanks to their culture of debate as practiced preeminently in the House of Commons. One false word–heck, one slight hesitation–and you’re mincemeat.
That’s my theory, anyway.
I’m not sure that’s so–what if you were to look at their college papers & they showed talent?
I’d say the pressure extends from the HoC outward to the universities, the whole education system and the whole culture. So I’d expect their college papers would be impressive.
Shouldn’t you be expecting everyone’s to be impressive? Or at least everyone in university? But that’s absurd-
The podcast was an excellent use of my time… Thank you.
He’s very interesting to listen to – although, when he was providing us with some good writers, both conservative and liberal, I couldn’t understand him. No doubt it’s my own ears, aging that they are, for there was a time because of my work that I could understand nearly every foreign speaker No more. That said, would you please supply us with those names he mentioned?
Dan Hannan For President 2016.
Hannan is a bulwark against both the mush of Cameron and the populism of Farage on the English Right.
Then he’s probably toast, wouldn’t you say?
Hand’s off. He’s ours ;-) We’re all waiting for Dan to leave the moules frites and stoemp behind in Brussels and take up his destiny as leader of the unified centre-right in the UK…
The best.
Daniel Hannan is a treasure.
Sure you deserve him? :)
