I’ve long admired John Bolton as the rare state department lifer whose loyaly to the united states is never in doubt.
That said, I’ve no doubt russia views our efforts in Ukraine the way we would view Mexican encouragement of a succession movement in Texas.
I hope that the eventual return of Ukraine to the Russian fold makes clear that ukranians do not hate their fellow Russians, they hate the soviet union.

Russian propaganda views it that way, but nobody with any understanding of the history between the two countries would. Have a look at the movie Mr. Jones about what was done to Ukraine as just one example of why Ukraine or any other Russian neighbor should ever be drawn back into the Russian fold. And if they annex Ukraine, the Soviet Union is reborn. That is in nobody’s interests. Not even or especially in the interests of the Russian people.
Ukrainians are not “fellow Russians” any more than Lithuanians. And believe me, there is plenty of well deserved hatred towards Russia.
Yes, Russians who believe they should rule over all of their neighbors may view things that way, but that doesn’t make them right. Ukraine is not a region of Russia that wants to break away. They have been an independent nation since 1991. I suppose there might be some old Germans who believe that Poland, France, and the Netherlands should really be returned to the German fold.
