avatar_1428772734-192x192The Baltics are little, beautiful countries a long way from the United States – and very close to Russia. They were once ruled – captured and brutalized – by the Kremlin. Today, they are members of NATO.

What does this mean? Does it matter? The issue has come up in the current presidential race. And Andrew Stuttaford is an excellent man to address it. He talks with Jay about matters historical and burningly current. They are related.

Love these podcasts, but why does Lileks’ intro come blasting on at an explosive decibel level before Jay comes on at a more reasonable level?

Has it occurred to anyone else that Trump is simply mistaking NATO for the UN. I can remember for years people talking about how the UN relies heavily on the US contribution, that many of the member nations contribute little or nothing. Knowing Trump and his appalling ignorance of just about everything a person who hopes to hold the highest office in the land should know, I really wonder if he really knows anything about the NATO alliance, why it exists, and what we as a nation get from it for our contributions. I really wonder if he is confused about the two very different organizations, or was confused, made a dumb statement, and now is unwilling to admit he made a mistake. It certainly fits his “character” such as it is.

That is an amazing idea. I never would have thought.
