Anne Applebaum is a historian and journalist, a columnist for the Washington Post. She is a particular expert on the former Soviet Union and its bloc. Her latest book is “Red Famine: Stalin’s War on Ukraine.” With Jay, she discusses this book: the “terror-famine” that killed so many Ukrainians. In Ukraine, why did the Russians stop advancing?
My suspicion is, Putin was shocked by the tepid support in Crimea for the Russian takeover there. The indigenous inhabitants, the Crimean Tatars, had been killed or deported by the Soviets long ago, and replaced by Russians, so Putin may have expected overwhelming support, which he didn’t get.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Russian population of Crimea would like to be united with a free and democratic Russia — but Putin’s dark and dangerous gangster state is another matter!
Wasn’t “Chronicler of Evil” a song or album by Blue Oyster Cult?
I found this very biased and one sided. How terrible is the new Polish government for daring to criticize the integrity of the Supreme Court. Unmentioned by Miss Applebaum is the fact that the outgoing government packed said Supreme Court in much a way that FDR tried to do to the US supreme court back in the 30’s. Context is kinda important.
Picking 3 after it lost the election. If I want one sided commentary I can go to CNN.
