Bill Bennett is one of America’s great teachers. He taught, really, when he was secretary of education. He teaches daily on his radio show. And he teaches through his books, the latest of which is America the Strong: Conservative Ideas to Spark the Next Generation.

bennett-FB-icon3In this “Q&A,” Jay asks him to talk about drug legalization. And Common Core. And the terms “neocon” and “establishment.” He also asks him to identify big problems with 1) liberals, 2) conservatives, and 3) libertarians. There is also a little talk concerning the upcoming presidential election.

Bonus – big bonus: Bennett tells some marvelous Reagan and Bush 41 stories. Worth the price of admission all by themselves!

So, common core has been hijacked by the left. A federal, centralized approach ended up being taken over by the collectivists. Who could have seen that coming?

I want to like Bill Bennett, but his Common Core and drug war positions are so divorced from reality that it’s hard to take him seriously.

Very interesting discussion. It is hard not to like the man. That he was surprised that Washington took over common core is a surprise. Any top down approach will always be taken over by Washington. The war on drugs seems beyond establishment grasp especially anyone who has run it. Admittedly there is no politically easy solution.

Great podcast as usual. Bennett is an interesting guy. I, like others, am also curious on his common core and drug war positions. I don’t see much issue with legalizing marijuana. It is a vice—but any more detrimental than alcohol?

Additionally, why would he assume that a top-down approach to education, which seems to have been well intentioned, wouldn’t be abused, perverted, and tainted once Washington got its grimy paws on it?
