Earlier this month, Bret Stephens wrote a searching essay on the New York Times’s 1619 Project. Stephens is a columnist for the New York Times himself. The 1619 Project places slavery at the center of the American founding (and thus of America). With Jay, Stephens talks about this, and much else: the presidential campaign, the Middle East, New York City, and more. Bret Stephens won the Pulitzer Prize in 2013. Jay often says that he wishes he could give Stephens a second one.

I probably shouldn’t be, but I’m amused when I hear the proper and genteel Mr. Nordlinger talk about “going commando” in that underwear ad.

    Excellent interview. Thank you.

I’m sure you 2 gentlemen—and I am a BIG fan of you both—are still so stubborn that making yourselves feel Oh So Virtuous by being #NeverTrumpers will still not allow yourselves to acknowledge the absolutely lesser place we as a Nation (and world) would be if your views had prevailed….Hillary with 3 judges at SCOTUS. 300 HRC/DNC Federal Judges. NATO relying on us$$…locked into Paris Accords…ISIS and the Caliphate thriving. No embassy in Jerusalem… Taxes…regulations…kneepad positions towards China…and so much more. You both forgot the Buckley Rule and ignored Milton Friedman of asking yourselves: ‘Compared to what?’

I haven’t listened to Jay in a long while, but I really enjoyed the interview.  I also feel sorry for New York except that’s what they elevated to office, so I suppose they have to embrace the suck.  As a history teacher, I am especially grateful to Stephens for pushing against the premises of 1619 by taking them up on their own desires to “start a conversation.”
