Well, we had planned to continue our tutorial on the natural law basis for genuine constitutional originalism, but we two professors reverted to form and didn’t prepare! And we’ve got standards, so we’re not going to fake it. Instead, we got distracted by the news of the week, including FranceFrance!—deploring the wokeness of American university culture and calling it a threat to French culture. Can it really be after all this time we actually might want France to invade America again?

And is there some kind of trial going on in Washington? We keep hearing rumors and whispers, but what’s really going on? We settle on the conclusion that the current impeachment is a perfect example of what Dan Boorstin called a “pseudo-event.”

And can it really be true that Ibram Kendi is a transphobic bigot? Apparently so, but it doesn’t matter, because, as we explain, 25 years from now now one will remember Kendi anyway.

Finally, what would you get if Michael Anton had a lobotomy? You’d get Molly Ball’s article in Time magazine on the “conspiracy” (her term) to secure the election for Joe Biden. This ought to be more startling than it is. It means our elites have decided they can run over the core American principle of government by consent of the governed.

Finally, responding to a letter from a reader, we walk through some of the worst Hollywood film remakes, and experiment with some new exit lines. (Hint: we’re going to “circle back” to them next week.)

We sell 11-foot-poles for people you wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot-pole.

Awhile back I suggested you use the Darby O’Gill version of Whiskey in the Jar.  The Darby O’Gill version is much more raucous and fun than the one you use.  The one that you use is sort of laid back, unengaged, and dare I say “stoned”.  Whiskey leads to raucousness.  This is not the “Three Joint Happy Hour”.  Exuberance, raucous fun, and potentially unwise expression of politically incorrect truths: that is where we want you to go on this broadcast.

Yeah, I know the defects of the Jerry-Can one we’re using now, though we do mix up the exit tune every week (an encouragement to listen to the very end). We had no idea this format was going to be so popular when we started this on a lark, or that it would become a weekly feature! (And who knows—our “Oscar and Felix” act my yet end up with one of us killing the other.) Anyway, long story, but I tend not to like the pure Scottish-Irish folk-fiddle versions of the tune, but like the girl says when she’s breaking up with you, “It’s me, not you.” We’ll start rotating more versions and other titles soon.

Thanks for the reply.  No fiddle in Darby O’Gill. It is more of an Irish Pub version than a folk version, electric guitar is prominent.
I have enjoyed the show, and thanks for doing it.

Ah, I haven’t found that version. I keep getting a traditional folk fiddle-based version.

I’ve always been partial to the Thin Lizzy version on their 1973 album Vagabonds of the Western World (the song only appears on German pressings for some reason):

Darby O’Gill version has a humorous reference to the Thin Lizzy version at the end. Something about money, women, cars and spandex.

Count me in as one of your 17 listeners (or is it 18 now?)!  I love you both – Steve for your eternal optimism and Lucretia, because if I had a podcast, I would say everything you say!

Found it! It’s hard to use YouTube versions though. Need an MP3 or equivalent file.

Oh well. Might have to go with the Metallica version.

This has been very encouraging, now if I can just get Andrew Klavan and John Podhoretz to change their intro music, things will really be looking up.

If we can circle back to the topic of Jen Psaki for a moment. I think that you must agree that whatever we can say about her looks or intelligence  …  she is a pretty faithful representation representative of her president.

I think Jen Psaki has grown up with the Biden agenda.  Joe Biden has had to learn it on the fly. I think she is better able to talk for the administration than Biden (not a high bar, I admit).
