Summary
Polls show that immigration is a top concern for voters going into the midterm elections. Young people comprise a large percentage of those who will going to the polls – how interested are they in immigration? In this week’s Center for Immigration Studies podcast, Parsing Immigration Policy, a former Center intern and third year law student, Jackson Koonce, talks about how he became interested in the immigration, why it is an important issue, and what he learned about the topic while interning at the Center.
Koonce grew up in San Diego, and now attends law school in a border state. In both cases, immigration – both legal and illegal – are common topics of conversation and news stories. When looking for a summer internship, he prioritized think tanks and immigration. During his time at Center, he worked with analysts covering many different immigration issues, whose beliefs fall across the political spectrum. His time at CIS taught him how laws are passed, policies are implemented, and more importantly, his research and access to experts showed him how immigration impacts a vast number of issues and the complexity of the topic.
CIS internships offer a great opportunity for professional development growth. The program benefits those planning to pursue various career paths, including public policy, public relations, law, law enforcement, and international work. For many interns, this D.C. internship is a strategic step prior to attending graduate school or beginning a career.
The internship program, designed to be either in-person or remote, is open to undergraduates, graduate students, and recent college graduates.
