This week on Need To Know, Mona and Jay discuss the discourse on Syria, including the irony of John Kerrry describing the situation as “a Munich moment”. Also, the dilemna of taking out Assad, Al-Jazeera’s unique brand of journalism, Miley Cyrus twerks and the pervasive stripper culture, Dennis Rodman’s detente, and the slippery slope of extending American power abroad.

Don’t miss another moment of Mona and Jay: subscribe to Need To Know here.

Paul Fussel TNR 1981 Thank God for the Atom Bomb

Many years ago in New York I saw on the side of a bus a whiskey ad I’ve remembered all this time. It’s been for me a model of the short poem, and indeed I’ve come upon few short poems subsequently that exhibited more poetic talent. The ad consisted of two eleven-syllable lines of “verse,” thus:

In life, experience is the great teacher. In Scotch, Teacher’s is the great experience.

You repeatedly called Russia an enemy and I think you included China in the enemy group as well. This surprised me, as I just don’t see how or why they could be construed to fall into that grouping. Certainly they view themselves as competitors. I think its pretty obvious that perceived self interests are not aligned in a number of areas. Clearly they will seek competitive advantage to further their interests, sometimes exploiting our idiocy to do so. I don’t see how this gets elevated to enemy status however.

Your views and mine are far apart and I would really be interested in understanding your viewpoint.

I should think Jay is whistling past the graveyard on this point. Mars the Bringer of War would be more appropriate. Or perhaps Neptune the Mystic. I suppose Uranus the Magician lends itself to too many obvious jokes.

And if we must curse the darkness with irony, then I propose Venus the Bringer of Peace.

Fabulous podcast. I appreciate how you are so cheerful about the left. I also appreciate how you call out the hypocrisy. It is such a battle but here I am in Canada loving your comments and getting little bits of info to back up my arguments here in Canada.

Miley is silly. My sons were telling me that this is stupid and attention seeking but also probably a celebration of mental illness if you look at Britney and the other stars.
