What strikes me about this discussion is that the program is well named, The Editors. The focus is all PR, impressions left, embarrassments caused, and while such things matter, they aren’t real outside of their own lives, they’re tools or clubs for real things. I suppose this is natural among folks who are and have always been journalists but it’s also limiting. The one thing they all get right is that we don’t know what’s going on in North Korea, in Kims head, in their economy, their nuclear program, Kims position, vulnerability, opportunities. We’re getting a sense of who President Trump is, but here too the Editors focus on PR, impressions, the 24 hr news cycle spin that enters and vanishes, and Trump’s problematic personality and style, limit their ability to see more clearly what might be going on. Of course Kim has won a victory by meeting with President Trump, but it’s a domestic victory for him and it cost us nothing. Trump gave him a gift of a world stage with him and that has strengthened Kim. If he’s vulnerable the way the Iranian regime may have been when Obama strengthened them, then it’s a cost, but if there is a chance of denuclearization then it’s a plus. That’s the goal and it cost us nothing.
