“Is electing a child molester worse than electing a Democrat.”
Of course, it depends on the child molester and the Democrat. The purpose of a stink bomb (even if the accusation leveled at the target is true) is to focus the minds of simple voters on one and only one issue to the exclusion of all others.
Democrats support abortion under any circumstance, including the convenience of the mother and despite the scientific fact that every abortion kills a human being. Is it always immoral? No. Is it sometimes immoral? Yes. But Democrats stand shoulder to shoulder insisting that it is always morally off-limits to intellectual and legal examination. So would I support someone (if I lived in Alabama) who committed a lewd act, inappropriately touching an underage girl, 38 years ago over a guaranteed vote against conservative judges? Yes. Yes, I absolutely would.
It is also important to consider that there is only one credible report of an illegal act. The other woman claiming that Moore signed her yearbook and forced himself on her is not credible. Even the yearbook signature is questionable. The other women are objecting at this late date that Moore dated them, kissed them, hugged them or asked them out. None of these things are horrible nasty things – not really. The time to object to the kiss is when the kiss takes place – not 30 some years later. And the objection to the kiss need not be made known to anyone other than the man attempting to steal the kiss. It is not cause for public shaming. The purpose of the testimony of these girls is only to add force to the complaint of the one and only one woman who has a legitimate complaint – as though all of these women were similarly accusing him of a lewd act.
So would I reluctantly vote for Moore if I lived in Alabama? Yes. Because there are many issues to consider regarding who should occupy this Senate seat. Moore’s bad behavior is but one element to consider. He would not be my first choice of all possible candidates, but he would be my choice ahead of a Democrat.
Only those with a simple mind will focus on a single issue.
Michael,
You need to stow the holier-than-thou attitude. Those of us who voted for Trump made decisions based on our principles, not by ejecting our principles. We voted for the lesser of two evils, and it has worked out very well for us. Those who were in safe states (whether Massachusetts that had no chance of going Republican or Georgia that had no chance of going Democrat) and could afford to vote for Egg McMuffin rather than Trump were blessed. They weren’t risking anything by supposedly remaining Simon-pure. They put their “purity” ahead of the country and the principles upon which it was founded. It was pure selfishness on their part. When I voted Trump, I wasn’t electing him my husband, I was electing him as President of a Constitutionally-limited, governmental corporation.
So, let’s look at Roy Moore. Have any sexual allegations come from the last thirty-two years while he was married? No. How old was his bride when he married? Twenty-four to his thirty-eight. Younger, but acceptably adult. It’s not like he married a sixteen-year-old, which he could have in Alabama. (My grandfather did. Of course, Granddaddy was only 21 at the time.) Roy Moore must not have exclusively dated young uns. Now, we have over thirty years without a sexual issue or scandal since he has been married? Can you claim the same record, sir? Whatever happened forty years ago with Roy Moore, it does not seem to be a continuing problem, unlike those of the long-married Al Franken, Charlie Rose, Jack Kennedy, LBJ, FDR, or many others had and some still have, some of whom your Simon Pureness has probably voted for without knowing. These sex allegations against Moore are worthless.
If you want something to hit Moore with, he’s got plenty of other issues on his record that are much more recent and much worse, but again, the people of Alabama are hiring someone for our federal board of directors, not for sainthood.
Third, I know you are predicting a Moore victory, and we shall see how accurate that is, but every poll this month is showing Jones ahead. One has to go back to last month to even find a tie. So, your constant harping on this subject and throwing it in our faces with insults, such as “Once you’ve thrown away your principles to vote for Trump…,” seems more about burnishing your credentials as Simon-pure than about anything real in the news.
I don’t need constant excrement dumped on me from the heights where people like you and @jameslileks and @davidfrench believe yourselves to live. I have limited time for podcasts, and you are working very hard to free my time to listen to someone else who is not constantly insulting me and calling me names. Now, straighten up and fly right.
Amen, brother! (Although Michael did admit something about his intelligence in this podcast, I believe.)
