‘cheap suit’ – because any halfway decent suit would be hung on a hanger in a closet or garment bag
‘why shutdown?’ – Yes it’s partly, as you say, about their negotiating position, but I think mostly it’s something else, because the shutdown didn’t do anything to improve their position. I think it was 90% about posturing for the primaries – and in particular during the Women’s March. (Did you see them celebrating the shutdown?) Unfortunately for DEMs they had to end the shutdown quickly because of the vulnerable DEMs who reminded leadership that their fate in the general matters more than protecting incumbents in safe seats from primary challenges.
I’m not sure there was any wsyfor them not to have done this- they were pulled in two directions – but it sure made them look stupid.
PLUS– If you’re trying to avoid the “our base is crazy re: immigration/amnesty” problem, you want to shove DACA through without an actual debate on immigration policy
Thought about this some more…
I remembered what I learned from my mom. She altered my dad’s suits (and mine when I was a teen) to save money. A nice suit will have at least three layers in the jacket. With pockets and extra at the seams (so you can adjust it if you gain weight) it can have 6 layers in some places. I suppose you could fold them, but it’d be less like folding bed sheets than like folding a thick woolen blanket.
The simplest jackets which have only a single layer are ‘unstructured.’ They’re really only suitable as warm weather wear and you’d buy them as a separate rather than a suit. They are cheaper than a formal suit and in an earlier era, you might have worn them as activewear during the summer. Today an unstructured jacket with matching pants should cost a quarter what you would pay for a nice suit.
The only exception to this rule would be the ’80s linen Armani summer suits. Armani took something that had been inexpensive active wear and made it ‘fashion forward’ by marketing it as a rakish (and much more comfortable) alternative to business wear.
It was for the trend setter who rejected the Wall Street power tie and braces uniform. They were lightweight unstructured jackets with matching trousers, but they were resort wear that was not worn with a tie. Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) would roll the sleeves and he usually wore them with a two button Henley or a pastel t-shirt.
You could easily fold them, and they got creased and wrinkled. These suits really would fold like a bed sheet or tablecloth.
True, and the s—hole leak was an obvious gamble by people in a weak negotiating position to force concession they wouldn’t get otherwise. ‘We had to inform the public about this moral outrage.’ Baloney. It would have stayed in the room (at least until 2020) if he hadn’t rejected their deal.
BTW, I’m not as convinced as you are that he meant we shouldn’t take people if they’re from such countries. He may have meant that. He may merely have meant we should stop holding spots open for people from those countries. Being from an s—hole country isn’t a reason you should be given preference, especially when non s—holes (he mentioned Norway but Asian countries too) do a better job educating their citizens.
Both readings make sense in context.
On the Women’s March: That’s what concerns me- they’re silly but they’re getting organized for the midterm. What happened to the voter information from the Tea Party groups? Or the Trump rallies? Surely now is the time to start counter organizing. Where would the Pats be if they had no defense?
On Cosby: This reminds me of the Trump, Moore, character stuff. I wouldn’t support them in primaries, but depending on the circumstances I’d vote for them in a general and not feel at all bad about it.
I would not see Cosby live, but I’ll pay for something of his if it’s the only way I can get it. It’s popular to pick Pryor or Carlin, but IMHO he’s the greatest standup of all time. And FWIW, I have copies of all of Polanski’s and Woody Allen’s movies.
I just pirate stuff if I don’t want to support an artist. That extends to execrable politics too. I use P2P software if I want a Sarah Silverman album or Amy Schumer special, but I ordered all of Gaffigan’s albums via his website and I bought every CD & DVD Brian Regan has made.
One of my mom & dad’s 1st dates was a Cosby standup show. I grew up with Cosby teaching reading skills on PBS in the afternoon, his Saturday morning cartoon, and primetime Thursday night sitcom. My mom did what you did: put the albums on tape. Those albums were the soundtrack for all our road trips, which prevented arguments about the radio.
