The libertarian position on immigration seems to be that the road to liberty is admitting as many socialists as possible. That is, many immigrants come from countries where the purpose of politics is predation — robbing Peter to pay Paul — and that rationalizes as socialism or progressivism.
This is largely because in the mid-1960s, when the Republican Party was nearly extinct, the Democrats rewrote our immigration laws for their own benefit and the harm of the country. Educated immigrants are a benefit to the country; but uneducated immigrants are a benefit to the Democratic Party, because they are easier to form into obedient and easily manipulated voting blocks .
Even without that, mass immigration is problematic. It’s like a corporation constantly issuing stock, diluting the value of existing stock. As immigrants swell the voter rolls, the votes of the native-born count for less and less.
This is an illustration of your point about Democrats giving up on white rural voters. In Virginia, this parade in rural western Virginia was, until now, a “must” attend event for all statewide candidates. They are not going out of their way to insult voters like in New Hampshire, but they just don’t think they are important anymore.
