The great Jonah Goldberg joins the podcast today to discuss:

  • Another day, another “Donald Trump Tweeted!” media freak out.
  • Are we witnessing the return of “Londonistan?”
  • A sports guy says “boobs” and stuff happens
  • And “Banned in Boston”—The city bans Christians from, as the kids say, “letting their freak flag fly”

One of my friends’ 17-year-old daughter is really excited about the “Handmaids” protests. It’s kind of depressing.

Good Lord! I wonder what your friend’s daughter would say if she was asked to list the parallels between the plight of women in “A Handmaid’s Tale” and the plight of women in America.

I’m not kidding. If she was ever asked to be specific — in an essay, let’s say — how would she answer?

I doubt that she could. It’s not a bad question. But, at her age, she just “feels” things. Look at the women protesting in some of those marches. They are twice, maybe three times this young woman’s age. Could they write an essay about what women have to confront in today’s America? If they could actually write an essay, it wouldn’t be much different than the marches. And I wonder if they could spell the four letter words!

Thanks for the comments! I believe the huge opportunity for conservatives is the gap between reality and the bizarro-world-few of the #Woke and #SJW crowd. I try to play there often.

I agree that her views are probably based more on emotion than logic. But that’s not just teenagers. That’s the Left in general. Actually, it’s a huge percentage of the Right now, too, which makes me very sad indeed.

But my question was, What would this teen say if she had to answer the question? — if it was part of a test or a homework assignment?

Let’s say her Social Studies teacher said, “OK Lisa, you have strong convictions and I respect them, but this is a graded assignment and I need you to support your opinion with examples. I’m looking for a 750 word essay. Have it on my desk by tomorrow.”

If she doesn’t do it, she fails the assignment (naturally). So she has to do it.

    So what would she say?

This podcast and the Federalist’s review of the Emmys broadcast was about as much as I could stomach about the awards show, much less watch it. Regarding The Handmaid’s Tale, the Federalist article discusses this about the show’s star, Elisabeth Moss:

“…Elisabeth Moss, the star of “The Handmaid’s Tale” who fancies herself as a feminist, belongs to the church of Scientology, which allegedly forces women to undergo abortions. I’ll let Yashar Ali of New York Magazine explain it with these tweets.”

The series of tweets that follow and the extended quote from Jezebel (never thought I’d be referring to that site approvingly) are quite informative.

I can’t quite make out the name and affiliation of your second guest (Partez Cella? IGR?) but if she were ever to do as she suggested on TV, I would Never. Stop. Laughing.

    What is “The Christian Flag”?

Does it have anything to do with the Princess of Canada?

The Handmaid’s Tale was written the way it was because it was a weapon in the culture wars, not intended to be truthful; thus, the bad guys had to be Christians, not Muslims. I’m sure Margaret Atwood knew that what she was describing were features of some Islamic countries, not Christian ones, but she chose to attack the near enemy rather than the distant enemy.

Thirty years later, this turned out very lucky for her, as it’s no longer permissible among progressives to criticize Islam, so the story, ridiculous as it is, fits the current progressive Zeitgeist to a T.

    How true. And how sad.

Thanks so much! And this is a different approach to podcasting (designed for short-term consumption), so it’s a work in progress. Any suggestions/criticism/snark is welcome.

Her name is Pardes Seleh and she’s terrific! I know her from Red Alert Politics. She’s now at IJR.com
