Fascinating program, Mr. Scalia. You prompted me to subscribe to Ricochet.
I could relate somewhat to Mr. Carstens’s story of a late return to graduate school, having started the MLA Program with concentration in English through Harvard’s Extension School at age 58. (I graduated in 2020 and am still looking forward to an eventual commencement ceremony on Harvard Yard.) I believe that is one way colleges have changed for the better since my undergrad days in the 1970s — many more people studying later in life.
Having just retired as a high school English teacher, I now feel inspired to truly dig into the Great Books Mr. Carstens mentioned. Thank you again.
Inspires me to listen to this interview with Carstens. Thanks for the recommendation.
Enjoyed the interview. Especially Mr. Carstens looking over from the Naval Academy and saying ‘heh what’s that place’ about St. Johns – and then ending up back there.
Thank you for this, Mr. Warford—and welcome to Ricochet! Happy reading!
I’m so glad you enjoyed the conversation, Colleen. I love that the Naval Academy and St. John’s are so close to one another. As if to say, “Yes, prepare for war if you must—but remember what is worth fighting for.”
