concerning kids acting up when on the phone: When mine were preteen/teen, they like to ask if they could go somewhere or do something when I was on the phone. I’d wave them away to get rid of them, then wonder where they were when I was off the phone. It was a well calculated tactic to get easy permission to do something. Kids are pretty intuitively manipulative.
