The Panic Scale

On a scale of how worried to be about Coronavirus, Toby is on three, but James is on eight. In fact, James thinks he’s got it. As of publication there’s been 373 confirmed cases in the UK and 6 confirmed deaths.

Also on the agenda: Britain’s forthcoming green budget from the relatively unknown (but heavily ratioed on Twitter) Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, the no-platforming of former MP and cabinet member Amber Rudd and a take on the brilliance of the late Max von Sydow, who died last Sunday at age 90.

Based on their description of the symptoms I have had coronavirus at least twice in the past 6 months and so has the rest of family…

As writers and podcasters, Jim and Toby are the cockroaches of the Coronavirus holocaust?

P.S.:  Jim and Toby spend about the first 20 minutes whingeing about coronavirus, so it’s probably a good idea to just skip that.

I get the feeling that any show the guys recommend, I will probably dislike.

N.B.:  Bringing an AI back from the “dead”, as they say happened in the second season of Altered Carbon, ought to merely involve executing a backup.

Sci-fi TV shows have a habit of anthropomorphizing what are, in reality, sophisticated computer programs.

I really wish “bog roll” would catch on in the US.

I liked the first season of Altered Carbon, which I think of as a grittier, lower budget version of Blade Runner. Until there’s a Blade Runner TV series, I’ll put up with Altered Carbon. My biggest complaint about Altered Carbon season 1 was the end – everything seemed to wrap up much too neatly, reminded me of a sitcom episode ending (oh, how convenient, we all seem to be in the same place for this melodramatic end scene.)

The new season of Babylon Berlin was meh – not bad, but not great or near the level of the first story line.

The fear isn’t that stores are going to run out of “bog roll”. It’s the fear that stores are going to run out of employees who’ll show up to open shop.

Sad to see that the sturdy British spirit is no more. My Greatgrandmother her son, his wife and one of their children died during the Spanish flu epidemic. It left my grandmother, her father and one nephew alive over a 3 week period. We are nowhere near that level.

I watched Season 1 of Altered Carbon. I liked it enough (to finish the season), but I’m not sure if I am going to watch Season 2 yet. I suppose I probably eventually will when I am looking for something to watch.

“And it really is killing people on a really frightening scale.”

No. It’s not. Crazy stupid panic.

It’s certainly my vocabulary word for the day.

Yes, the draconian measures in mainland C. seem to have slowed transmission down to a manageable level–after letting it get out of control in the first place.

Meanwhile, the ordered liberty model of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea has apparently accomplished the same goal.
