The Empire Are the Good Guys

For the second time in a week, James Delingpole and Toby Young take to the microphones to keep us up to date on the latest machinations of the Remainers and the state of Brexit with a special edition of London Calling. Is this a moment of reckoning for both the country and the Conservative Party? Is this the Conservative Party voters have been waiting for?

Winston Churchill succeeded in keeping the Europeans out of Britain. Now the grandson, for one, welcomes the new continental overlords.

Thank you for this timely and frank discussion of this complicated situation. I thought the story of the Brexit vote at Eton (beginning about 33:00), illustrative of the difference in opinions and desires of the classes, especially intriguing.

Maybe President Trump has reached an agreement for Poland or Hungary not to agree to an extension.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone who has studied Britain’s attitude toward appeasement in the 1930’s since it was the upper classes who were the loudest appeasers and supporters of Chamberlain’s Munich Agreement. Among his class, Churchill was indeed the voice in the wilderness. Churchill would have no doubt supported the EEC as it made fiscal and political sense to promote peace among the European nations. However, he would have seriously opposed the EU. To even lightly entertain the idea that Churchill would allow his precious British race to be ruled by the Belgians, Germans and French is beyond the pale.

I would like to thank James and Toby for keeping us confused Yanks apprised of what’s going on in this critical period in British politics. I’m a huge fan of this podcast and never miss an episode (except when GoT was the topic…..yawn).

If either of them reads this, though, I’ve love to hear them address the potential role of Nigel Farage and the Brexit party. Are they spoilers, or could they potentially align with the Brexit-favoring Tory MPs to finally push through a real-deal Brexit?

How could Parliament enforce its legislation ordering Boris Johnson to ask the EU for an extension? On the one hand Parliament asserts the right to govern in opposition to the views of the PM, while on the other hand it weakens its assertion of the right by declining to support an election. The latter would seem to strengthen the PM.
