James has something he needs to get off his chest and opens the show by taking Toby, as the Americans would say, to the woodshed. As far as James is concerned journalistic curiosity is dead.
Then it’s on to the major news of the day, the UK has become the first nation to give regulatory approval for one of the new Covid-19 vaccinations. Because of fast tracking, this vaccination has seen limited clinical trials. If it all goes wrong who will be held liable?
To round things out Toby gets us up to date on the latest on the Free Speech front and the crucial difference between respecting things and tolerating them, plus as Brexit negotiations continue with Brussels we wonder if this is the Prime Minister’s last chance to re-invent himself as a political force or has his fate been etched in stone?
The viewing recommendations lean heavily on Deutsche Kultur as James returns to Babylon Berlin for Season Three and Toby touts Generation War, which according to war correspondent Sean Langan, has some of the most realistic battle scenes ever committed to film.
This week’s opening sound is health secretary Matt Hancock’s announcement of the vaccine approval in the House.

My guess would be Israel. Isn’t that the norm over there?
Joe Biden did not win “by 6 million votes”. Fraud or no fraud. The margin of victory, properly considered, was as follows:
“Trump would have won on 3 November if he had won the states of Arizona, Georgia and Wisconsin. He lost by 0.3 per cent, 0.2 per cent and 0.6 per cent respectively. That is, a total of 43,809 votes across three states.” (see Gerard Henderson, columnist for The Australian, at Media Watch Dog).
That was the margin of victory.
Moreover, polls suggest that 30% of Democrats and 73% of Republicans believe the election was stolen. Not just a few nutters, then.
You are entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts.
I just tweeted to James to check ricochet for a breakdown of how many votes Biden “won” by
I’m shocked that Toby Young does not appear to be aware that the Electoral College determines who wins the election not the mythical popular vote margin. The changes in the voting by mail standards in Pennsylvania and other states violated the Constitution. Add that to the voting fraud in other swing states can easily give an EC margin to Trump.
I don’t know. How many American journalists understand it? At least Toby has an excuse as it’s not his country nor his electoral system.
Yes but Toby lived for many years in the US. Well, it was California….
People in California think they should rule the whole world, not just the US.
James is correct here, and Toby is uninformed.
Here is a link to a piece by Mark Levin, the talk show host and attorney in California, on 7 December 2020 in “Real Clear Politics”: https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2020/12/07/levin_why_pennsylvania_mail-in-ballot_changes_are_unconstitutional.html
The problem in Pennsylvania, dealing with a clear violation of that state’s constitution in multiple ways, began last year with a well-planned number of steps by the governor and others to permit virtually unrestricted mail-in voting without the safeguards that those of us who live in Europe now take for granted.
You just have to read the linked article above to understand. What the Democrats did was blatant, and the Republicans who control the Pennsylvania legislature were asleep at the switch. Their failure to demand adherence to their own state law at least contributed to Trump’s loss, which I think will very likely be confirmed in the next couple of weeks.
IIRC, in his excellent book, he was in New York. I think all his time spent on lockdown skeptics and the free speech union (which actually is fighting back in the UK courts! Huzzah!).
Yeah, that’s kind of embarrassing. Even more so because Toby’s primary motivation is “the desire not to look foolish” — aka concerns with status.
