Eighty years ago the United Kingdom and her Commonwealth stood alone against fascist tyranny – defiant and resolved to preserve their liberty. Now, all across the Anglosphere the citizenry is meekly abiding by all sorts of arbitrary and capricious dictates in the name of safety, including the postponement of elections. What’s happened?
If the Johnson government has cocked up its response to Covid, its response to the GCE A Levels has been even worse. (The UK equivalent of the American SATs.)
Then it’s off to the culture corner: James is looking for holiday reading material and Toby reviews the American series Yellowstone (starring Kevin Costner and an annoying shampoo advert).
This week’s opening sound of Labour Leader Keir Starmer criticising the Government’s GCE exams is courtesy of Sky News.

It seems there was a technical issue, or James muted his mic – but he is absent from most of the podcast. So a one-sided conversation by Toby : (
Please note: If James disappears about 10 minutes in to the episode you’re listening to, delete and redownload. An edit to eliminate background noise went astray!
Thanks. Problem solved!
Spoke too soon – now Toby has gone missing….
Oh, damn…
Now we should be fixed. Someone entered the room and began a conversation in the background. To isolate and eliminate that I had made a bad edit. Sorry about that.
Gentlemen, Yellowstone is a magnificent TV series, and Taylor Sheridon an amazing writer. He knows modern-day cowboys like no other, and (dare I say it) he can at times achieve a near-Shakespearean quality in his writing. The show is perfectly cast, and Kelly Reilly proves she’s a stunning actress, especially in Season 2.
Buy it! It’s smart in a way that bears repeated viewing as you show it to friends. No one is doing what Taylor is doing. Check out his work: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0792263/
If you’re not watching Yellowstone, you’re missing something singularly brilliant.
If James and Toby figure out how to communicate and coordinate with the other skeptics, let us know please.
James, you should try Celine’s Journey to the End of the Night for your reading pleasure. One of the greatest novels of the 20th century, and still one of the greatest novels ever written. You will not be disappointed.
Gates of Fire, is a fun read about war.
Actually, Robert Jordan died before the last book was written. Brandon Sanderson finished the series.
I’m in the midst of Longmire right now so, as usual, I’ll catch up with this show after its ended or in its 4th season. Thanks for the recommendation.
