Out of Your Easter Bonnet

In this special Easter weekend version of London Calling, James and Toby tackle the Church of England, from the Archbishop of Canterbury’s unwelcome intervention in the immigration debate to their refusal to ordain Calvin Robinson.

Then it’s on to that other religion, football, with QPR’s games on Good Friday and Bank Holiday Monday. We go frolicking with the Easter Bunny as James writes about the rabbit hole of chem trails and we talk about Joe Biden’s world of imaginary friends. Our news segment ends with the latest on the Eastern front with the sinking of the Moskva and whether things in Ukraine is going well or badly for Putin.

In Culture Corner: the BBC’s Platinum Jubilee Reading List, Slow Horses (Apple TV+), Operation Mincemeat (Netflix), Flying Colours and The Ship.

Opening sound this week is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Easter Sermon criticism of the Johnson Government.

CS Forester looks better and better as the years go by.
The General is one of the best books of its kind. I believe the German staff made it prescribed reading for its insights into command and failure of command. Deeply moving.

his earlier “London noir” books 1925 to 1938, are crime stories set among to “just about managing” tween-wars lower middle classes. One, the Pursued was ready to publish just as more Hornblower was frantically demanded by Forester’s publisher—the MS  was actually LOST. In his memoir part of  The Hornblower Companion regrets this mildly, and confessed he can’t remember much about the story. He says it might turn up in a hundred years somewhere.

In about 2007, it did, about 40 years after the author’s death. It’s very good indeed.

I have been a Delingpole fan since the days of Watermelons. What a happy warrior. And still a good friend to Toby. But his emergence as an absolutist naysayer without evidence and, despite his return to faith, his cynical distrust of everything Western are extremely disappointing to this devoted supporter. Ah, well, life is as it is.

I first heard of chemtrails on Fox News’ old “Red Eye” show, where Greg Gutfeld ridiculed it mercilessly.

It is truly one of the silliest of all conspiracy theories.

I think you should read the substack. The discussion didn’t do it justice.

James can’t even admit the obvious fact that the war is not going well for Russia. As far as he is concerned, left-wing, centrist, and right wing media are all part of a vast conspiracy.

I think Toby is pulling his punches; for example, he should have pointed out that, when Sweden and Finland clamor to join NATO, this is exactly the opposite of what Putin wanted to achieve.  Nor can one reasonably argue that giving Putin what he wants – a high price for oil and the Nordstream 2 pipeline – is Biden trying to provoke a war with Russia.

I suppose Toby realizes that really bringing it home to the weaker man would end their friendship.

Sorry; the Moon landing hoax and Flat Earth are ahead of it.
