I agree with your comments on the Confederate tv show… However I wont be watching the show (if it gets made) because it’ll be bad. How will I know it will be bad? Because no society that had slavery ever pursued mechanization or technological development. Prime example – case in point – James Watt’s steam engine. Every aspect of its science and technology had been known for centuries – the ancient Persians, Greeks and Romans all knew of steam power. But they had no interest in labor saving devices – because they had slaves to do the labor. So the southern confederate states can have slaves – but no auto industry, no aerospace and would barely able to keep the lights on.
The counter factual history I would like to see, is the industrial revolution occurring at the end of the Roman Republic – say 400 BC – where would we be today – being 2500 years into the industrial era, instead of 300?
@exjon, you should give Wallace another chance. Not sure I heard it completely correctly, but if you haven’t read Infinite Jest, you should try it. It’s one of the more unique novels out there, if you can suspend some disbelief for a while, and let it unfold.
The timing doesn’t work out but I’d wondered if I’d seen Jon on I-25 on 15 July. My family was going to Denver from Albuquerque and a car with Arizona plates and a Packers sticker passed us around Santa Fe. I thought Jon had mentioned he was a Packers fan so I jokingly thought it might be him.
Now comes this episode and Jon tells of his vacation and that he’d visited Santa Fe, Taos, etc.; traveling the road where I’d thought about him. Strange timings.
