HW’s management of the end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the USSR ranks up there with Norman Borlaug’s Green Revolution in terms of worldwide, humanity-advancing accomplishments. Also like Borlaug, HW did it so well that he’s barely noticed today. Like “not being subsistence farmer-hunter-gatherers” and “infant mortality rates well below 50%”, “communism not enslaving half the globe, and a superpower peacefully dissolving” is one of those things that was unimaginable to our forefathers, that we now take entirely for granted.
Defense of Marriage Act was passed in 1996. It was a long time ago. In the secrecy of the voting booth, many people have voted against gay marriage in the past. But you are correct that many of those voters would say they are for gay marriage if asked openly. I believe that today most would also vote for gay marriage but not for “bake the darn cake!”. Trump isn’t even trying to fight for evangelicals in this. Neither is anyone else. This is a lost cause.
