Pardon the Corruption

Jon Gabriel (@ExJon) and Stephen Miller (aka @RedSteeze) chat about Hurricane Harvey, Maybelline Macron, and why Sheriff Joe Arpaio is in no way a conservative. We also ask the question: if the ACLU isn’t willing to defend their own speech, how will they defend anyone else’s?

The intro song is “Just Like Heaven” by Dinosaur Jr. (covering The Cure’s classic). Stephen’s song of the week is “Mourning Sound” by Grizzly Bear and Jon’s is “Two Thousand and Seventeen” by Four Tet. Corruption?! Did you say “corruption”?! Corruption?!

The pardon of Sheriff Joseph Arpaio in no way involved corruption. If there was corruption, it was on the part of the 0bama administration’s DOJ.

    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/07/31/ex-sheriff-joe-arpaio-found-guilty-criminal-contempt.html

Arpaio, 85, was charged with misdemeanor contempt of court, declaring that he willfully defied a judge’s order in 2011 and prolonged his patrols for another 17 months, Fox 10 Phoenix reported.

Arpaio’s lawyers said they would appeal the verdict, contending their client’s legal fate should have been decided by a jury, not a judge. They also said U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton violated Arpaio’s rights by not reading the decision in court.

“Her verdict is contrary to what every single witness testified in the case,” his lawyers said in a statement. “Arpaio believes that a jury would have found in his favor, and that it will.”

Apparently, the only way to “win” is to not use every tool at our disposal like the other side.

Politics is a bit more than just being less crappy than the other guy. If that’s the standard, then it’s a race to the bottom.

I’m not surprised that Joe Arpaio’s lawyers are arguing that their defendant is not guilty.

He was a truly horrible sheriff and I’m happy voters tossed him from office by a whopping 10 points. (At the same time, the voters voted for Trump by a three-point margin.)

It is quite clear his prosecution was political. I find it amazing that my defense of the pardon power to correct political prosecutions has been ignored in this thread.

“Joe” is an enemy of our enemy. War makes for odd allies.

Jon, you know I respect you. Why wasn’t he jailed on all these horrible things you claim? Instead, the Left attacked him for upholding, yes Federal, immigration law, specifically because Obama wouldn’t allow ICE to do it. He absolutely should have been pardoned for that blatantly political charge.

So get some of your lawyer buddies together and charge him with all those other crimes, but don’t disparage the Pardon, which was absolutely the right thing to do.

Also, I love your Twitter feed.

Another great show. Especially appreciate your local insight into the corrupt activities of Sheriff Arpaio. But let me just say as a native of Wisconsin with similar insights, your comparisons of Arpaio to Sheriff David Clarke are unfounded. Yes, he also has a penchant for being in front of the cameras, but that is where the similarities between the two sheriffs end.

Given the discussion, this was not nearly as annoying as I thought it would be.

Jon, I know why you want Trump to be conservative and support conservatives, but why would he do that? I mean, how long has he not been a Democrat? He’s basically an economic nationalist, not a conservative. He’s willing to dance with the folks that brought him to the White House. He gave us Gorsuch. Hopefully, he’ll give us much more.

Second, you are a liberal. Sure, the term has been coöpted by a bunch of Progressives when their term became a pejorative. Now, they have tainted the name of liberal. We have to sometimes distinguish that we are “classical” liberals, as opposed to tools of a dead despotism.

On the Arpaio issue, I have to agree with this. I don’t think the President’s job is “to support conservatives.” His job is to execute and enforce the laws of the United States as Constitutionally passed by Congress, with or without a President’s agreement if the Congressional vote numbers are high enough. He may be using the power of the pardon a bit more lightly than other presidents have, or without a proper bribe compared to what at least one president has done, but it is of a piece with the man. On many things, most of which hurt nothing in the grand scheme of things, it’s full ahead on impulse power. On the other hand, on the things that have really mattered, Trump has gotten things right.

Joseph Arpaio reminds me of Francis Queeg, captain of the USS Caine. He is a very flawed person, but is trying to do the difficult job that his “betters” are trying to avoid.
