Fr. Damick, as a convert himself, and a communicator, is really a great person to talk to about Orthodoxy.

I’m enjoying this podcast immensely. Going to have to start checking out this guy’s other stuff.

In C.S. Lewis’ Pilgrim’s Regress he has the narrator take a ride with a (if I recall correctly) Mr. Enlightenment, who endeavors to prove that there is no Landlord. “For instance, in one village they think the Landlord is a snake. Now how that came about there was a travelling circus or menagerie which had a giant snake in it. The snake escaped, and some drunken peasant from that village saw it in a flash of lightning on some rainy night and figured that must be the Landlord. Therefor we know that there must be no Landlord.”

The kid listening to him doesn’t really follow the logic. “Did they catch the snake?”

Heh. If that story isn’t just a make-believe to make people feel better about the non-existence of God then it stands to reason that you ought to have heard the ending of the story too. If there is no truth in the Landlord stories then why is there truth in the stories made up to debunk them?

Thanks so much for this interview. Fr. Damick sounds like a fantastic priest and faith-explainer.

That’s a great way to put it!

I was glad to hear you bring of Lord of Spirits.  My own journey to Orthodoxy is not easily explained – I can put only so much into words – but to find that there are Christians who fully understand the so-called “enchanted world” and live it was fundamental for me.  So many people have, in their pursuit of making Christianity “less Catholic” or “more rational / enlightened”, or (and this one especially bugged me) more logical, done exactly what they so bemoan atheists doing: reducing Christ down to just another Good Teacher ®.  As I hear it put on one of the Lord of Spirits episodes, in explaining exactly what St. Nichols had done (which was repeated here) – the early Christians drove out the actual pagan deities, but in time people forgot that the demons had been all too real, then they decided that if the demons had not been real, then neither was God.  Too many modern Christians have missed this.

And yet, they could not explain experiences I and others have had, or they dismissed them entirely because miracles aren’t supposed to happen anymore.  I knew this all to be true.

The Lord of Spirits is very good. (Listen while reading the transcript. The sound on some of them is terrible.)

Also, on his other podcasts, Fr. Stephen De Young is saying some mind blowing things. I’ll be listening 2 or 3 times to every podcast this man ever made. I can’t quite get over my surprise over some of the things in the Bible and related archeological discoveries he’s describing and  explaining. I’m utterly fascinated and actually have had to make myself stop listening today to do other things.

Thank you so much for this post, Jon Gabriel. Also a big Thank You to Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick for taking time to do this podcast and The Lord of Spirits podcasts.
