Democrat Double-Down

Trump is President and protestors are grumpy. Jon Gabriel and Stephen Miller discuss Trump’s first week in office, and chat with Democratic commentator and communications consultant Lis Smith who thinks the DNC learned the wrong lessons in 2016. Lis served as the Deputy Campaign Manager for Martin O’Malley’s presidential campaign, the chief spokeswoman for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, and Director of Rapid Response for President Obama’s reelection campaign.

Our intro and outro music is “Repatriated” by Handsome Furs. Jon’s song of the week is “Warsaw Street” by Lea Porcelain and Stephen’s is “Underside” by You Say Party. I really enjoyed this podcast. Not only is it nice to hear from the other side in a decent respectful manner, its also good to hear from a campaigner and professional organizer.

To often the podcasts talk to academics, reporters and writers and not to people actually know how campaigns work. Sure you can ask a reporter what he thinks is going on. Or you could ask a organizer what is actually going on.

For me the biggest disappointment of 2016 was a self destruct of Brian Sweitzer Gov of Montana. A Midwest Democrat would have been a great counterpoint to the Democratic nomination.

Finally the shock about Wisconsin, is not that it went for Trump, but how both sides treated it like a safe Blue state, when it had clearly become a battleground. With Walker and Ryan creating powerful ground games and organizations. Sure the top of the tickets weren’t pro-Trump. But it my experience those guys don’t know how they get elected and its the grass roots that make or break victories. Not endorsements from sitting politicians.

Your conversation with Lis Smith was really interesting and didn’t make me want to tear my hair out. Thanks to both of you and Lis for providing something sane to listen to while I cleaned my apartment.

Do we really get to hear from Lis Smith? For 15 min. all I’ve heard is SM kinda navel-gazing and kinda blathering.

Please resolve your issues before showtime, rather than logic-chopping and hair-splitting on-air.
