Both Peter Robinson and VDH have convinced themselves, and seem to draw solace from, the idea that no other candidate could have won against Hillary and therefore Trump’s blemishes have to be overlooked. I disagree, and believe it’s a way of avoiding the fact that they acted as Lord Halifax rather than Churchill when the country needed them.

I sincerely believe any of the top candidates other than Jeb! [and maybe Ted “Gomer Pyle” Cruz] could have won the popular vote as well as a smashing victory in the Electoral College against Hillary. A Rubio/Walker ticket would have performed much better than Trump/Pence in the Upper Midwest, would have brought along New Hampshire and Ayotte, Nevada with Joe Heck, New Mexico, and would have laid the foundation for rebuilding the Republican brand on the West Coast. The immigration and trade issue disconnect that Trump brought to the fore would have been absorbed and learned before the general election, just as Howard Dean’s vanity campaign educated the Democrats in 2004 on the potency of the anti-war message.

I don’t think so. I’m still stunned that Trump won Michigan and Wisconsin while Romney and Paul Ryan could not win these home states. Romney lost Michigan by about 10% points. Romney-Ryan lost Wisconsin by about 7% points. Maybe Rubio could have won by capturing upper-income, college-educated states like Virginia, Colorado, and New Hampshire, but that’s a narrow path. Trump at least kept a third-party immigration hawk out of the general election. Rubio might not have been so lucky.

David Horowitz and VDH have the best analysis of Trump, by far.

Trump won Wisconsin with not many more votes than what Romney got. He did so while doing far worse in a lot of traditionally strong Republican districts, but making up for it in rural areas. I guess it all depends on how you think Trumps rural voters would have reacted. If they went for Hillary that would make it less likely to think Walker/Rubio would have won. But if they stayed home or still broke against her then potentially it could have been an even bigger rout.
