To mark this historical day, we’ve assembled a panel that we think reflects all sides of the new Trump administration — a mashup of the Ricochet Podcast and Need To Know with Charen and Nordlinger with a dash of Victor Davis Hanson thrown in for flavoring. It’s a bracing conversation that really gets into the weeds on the election and what may lie ahead.

Public service announcement: if you’re not a member of Ricochet and enjoy this podcast, be one of the 1,500 and join today.

Music from this week’s podcast: Orange Crush by R.E.M.

The ALL NEW opening sequence for the Ricochet Podcast was composed and produced by James Lileks.

Thank You Mona. I am 50 years old and was ignorant of the word gravamen. My Ricochet membership has been validated this year. I LOVE the fact that we Ricochetti can hear this kind internicene podcast.

    @peterrobinson

The position of your employees with regard to the members is that contributors can insult members with impunity. Is the site you wished to build?

This was one of the things I thought immediately after reading what @Blueyeti said. Along with wondering why the CoC doesn’t apply to contributors who pay nothing, but does apply to members, who are the sites monetary support. It should apply to both.

The CoC applies to contributors and to podcasters. There are no exceptions.

I believe you said the opposite in your previous comment, but perhaps that was simply my misperception. I’m glad you cleared that up.

There are actually people in this comment thread proposing that there be a code of conduct for commentators on podcasts because the opinions expressed by some commentators on the podcasts are in opposition to their own? Is this The Onion or something? That was really just parody, right? I mean, right?

No, Karl. It was my contention that Jay has, over the course of a year, made it clear that Trump’s followers are akin to Nazis, and that his criticisms of Trump apply equally to his followers. Taken in isolation, I would be charitable to Jay regarding his comments on this podcast, taking them only to apply to Trump lui-meme. Unfortunately, I listened to NTK extensively over the past year, and to me it is untenable to deny the well-established.

If you’re cool with a contributor calling a significant segment of the Ricochet community Nazis, I think you have a curious idea of the CoC.

Did I Make 6 Comments or Only 5 (View Comment):
However, Jay’s behavior is beyond the pale. It would be one thing for Jay to thus attack Trump while being charitable to his supporters as misguided. But he is equally vicious to Trump’s supporters, even very reluctant supporters. He even lashed out at James, who is to a great extent on the same side (James is evidently insufficiently uncivil).

Dude, to use the word “vicious” to describe Jay Nordlinger is pretty laughable. He doesn’t seem to me to have a vicious bone in his body. Lol

Well, we disagree. I find that last statement laughable. On certain topics, Jay is the quintessence of viciousness.

James: What does it do long term to the political climate if we become accustomed to people saying extreme outragous things?

VDH: Like What? Can I give you an example?

And Mona jumped in: “like thousands and thousands of Muslims celebrated 9-11 in the streets. How about that?”

You know why I think this is worth pointing out? Because thousands and thousands of Muslims DID celebrate in the streets. I would go so far as to estimate hundreds of thousands. But not here – in the countries from which we are allowing refugees and immigrants.

Yes, I had the same reaction. I don’t know if it is true that “thousands and thousands of Muslims” celebrated here in the streets, but I have heard several prominent law enforcement persons, including Giuliani, state that there were significant public displays of joy by Muslims around New York City on the day of the attack.

This is significant because I think it illustrates a disturbing tendency of Mona to dismiss contrary evidence without addressing it.

Along these same lines, I was a bit gobsmacked when she effectively asserted that McCain didn’t attack Trump. As I’ve mentioned, I was still listening to each Need to Know throughout 2015. I know she was aware of McCain’s attack at the time (and approved of it). She has simply flushed it down her memory hole to fit her narrative.

Fact check: Jay described the speech as something you might hear in a beer hall. He said nothing about the Ricochet community.

Jay’s comments about Trump have heavy implications for anyone who supports Trump, and dancing around it is silly. Jay is clearly making a reference to Trump sounding like a Nazi. Further, when he calls Trump a “demagogue” he is making a case that those who support him are irrational. While this is not against the CoC because it is not direct name calling, I do think it is perfectly reasonable for a Trump supporter to take offense. It is like calling Trump a “con man”. The only possible take away is that anyone supporting him has been “conned”. I think it is understandable to take offense.

I am sorry Jay has been on the receiving end of nasty Tweets and emails. That sounds awful. I also do not like the implication that my support of Trump is irrational.

    demagogue

    noun

    1. a political leader who seeks support by appealing to popular desires and prejudices rather than by using rational argument.

synonyms: rabble-rouser, agitator, political agitator, soapbox orator, firebrand, fomenter, provocateur

“he was drawn into a circle of campus demagogues”

    “Rational”

So you oppose getting double registered voters off of the rolls, getting dead people off of the rolls and getting aliens, legal and illegal off of the rolls? Yes, Trump wants to be able to say he won the popular vote. But if the investigation goes forward as announced, that is to discover the incidences of illegal voters and clear them from the rolls, I don’t care what his motivation is.

Yeti’s always been the podcast guy, and therefore interested in membership reaction to the podcasts.

I had to quit listening to “need to know” (which I had loved) because of the gratuitous anti-Trump vitriole, and here I am 10 minutes in and tempted to throw my iPad at the wall… President Trump was my 17th choice, and he is what we have– and his cabinet choices are excellent, and he may be able to get something done. …

I could have written your commentary word for word! That podcast was quite uncomfortable, like an intervention, but both Mona and Jay remained unrepentant. I too have boycotted their podcasts and no longer read Nordlinger’s articles in the National Review either. What a shame that such talented writers should be so close minded. Was it Salena Zito that said those who voted for Trump took him seriously, and not literally? I know both Mona and Jay are writers whose talent lies in the written word, but they completely fail to understand Trump. Or perhaps, they refuse to. What a shame.
