I’ve reconsidered and now like folk music
I live in Bay County Michigan (the area between your first finger and thumb on Lake Huron). The auto industry has lost its predominant presence here and the union retirees are dying/moving away also. We always vote Democrat. This time we went Republican, except locally, we still went Democrat. My ballot for local offices were mainly all unopposed Democrats. Next door Midland County, home of DOW, always goes Republican (Dave Camp’s home). Both voted for Trump in the general. Midland’s Dow High produces kids who are doing Calc 3 (not an exaggeration) before they can drive. They have a lot of PHD parents. Midland went Cruz(34),Trump(28), Kasich(24), Rubio(11) in the primary with 2x as many voters as dems, who went Bernie(60), Hillary(40). Couldn’t get Bay County stats. The Trump people I know from my area (not a concentration of high level degreed jobs), loved him from the get go over his comments on immigration and tariffs. One of his first rallies last year was in Birch Run, just south of here. I think these two counties are like night and day. Trump got big attention early and kept it. He made believers who evangelized for him.
A few shibboleths betrayed you today. I figured there would be more than a passing acquaintance with Ricochet.

I want to like this podcast, but seriously can’t stand it. Todd Feinburg talks over Mike Stopa the entire time. Mike can’t get an entire thought out without being interrupted by Todd. So annoying.

Mona is a very good egg. She’s a long time conservative stalwart and a culture warrior. Trump really got under her skin. She’s not the only one. Her podcast with Jay Nordlinger is fantastic. #alwaysmona.
@michaelstopa: The show today was Hillary-arious. Here is suggestion for Trump to build on his electoral success. Continue holding rallies but start a Bring A Friend program in which Trump supporters are invited to bring along black or Latino friends to hear Trump pitch his message of American rebirth. I think he could really win another important constituency to the GOP. Even if if it does not work it would annoy all the right people.
@michaelstopa: BTW Mona Charen’s last name is pronounced Chair-N. She and Jay Nordlinger had a delightful podcast until they embarked on their folie à deux over Trump. I love to listen to them when they are not on their Never Trump tirades.
Michael, Let me first congratulate you on being right about Trump’s electability and my being wrong. I am currently picking crow feathers out from between my teeth. I am not fully contrite, however, Trump has a long way to go to prove that he is a man of his word. There are a lot of people who voted for him, even supported him beyond that, who, like me, doubt that he will fulfill even a few of his campaign promises. I hope he does. I will be perfectly pleased to eat a lot more crow if he again proves me wrong.
On another issue, it would serve you well to learn to pronounce the names of your fellow podcasters on Ricochet. I consider it pretty rude to mispronounce names when their proper pronunciation is very easy to attain. Sal, above has given the proper pronunciation for Mona’s last name. John Podhoretz is on the GLOP podcast as well as the Commentary magazine podcast, and one listen to either would inform you of both his views and the proper pronunciation of his name. It is just common courtesy.
Apparently, I wasn’t the only one to find your pronunciations of Charen and Podhoretz jarring. I had not read the previous comments before posting. Didn’t mean to pile on. Still not convinced in the slightest that Trump’s victory was due to his competence as much as Hillary’s complete lack of such.
