The talk about changing journalism standards and Twitter reminds me of this.

That face when you realize a huge portion of the country still calls # a pound sign and you just called your protest #metoo.

    I call it an octothorp.

One doesn’t hear that one too often. I did know that was one of its other names.

I used to listened to the Commentary Podcast (before and during the 2016 election cycle) until I realized that  Pod was never right about any analysis or prediction he made concerning Trump or the election in general. If I had a nickle for every time that he declared it was all over for Trump I could by several lottery tickets.

Around minute 26, Jonah mentioned a town in Pennsylvania that had to be evacuated because a coal seam was on fire and could not be doused.  The town is Centralia, Pennsylvania, which has been abandoned — except for one church, a Ukrainian Catholic church that was built on solid rock, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church.  It stands today.  In 2015, on a visit, the Patriarch of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, recognized that this was a church with a special message, and made it into a site of pilgrimage.  There’s a pilgrimage to this church every August.  The parish remains active until today.

The podcast talked about people falling asleep while listening to a TV show.  I do something like this.  J-Pod has the kindest, most calming voice on radio today.  I also almost always agree with him.  I fall asleep to the Commentary Podcast.

After doing this for a number of months, I subscribed to Commentary, not for the articles, but to repay J-Pod for his melodious voice!

Jonah mentioned the Charles Murray writings on Apollo.  He’s talking about a book from 1989 titled “Apollo: The Race to the Moon” written by Charles and his wife.  I bought it when it came out, and have re-read it a few times since, including just a few weeks ago.  It remains the single best book I’ve ever read on Apollo.  It covers the story from the point of view of the Engineers and project managers.  The astronauts are mentioned only almost in passing.  Highest recommendation.

If you’re Japanese, it’s tasteless, but I’m not Japanese.

    😁

Years ago, a local talk radio host was talking about visiting the Pearl Harbor memorials, and that while out at the USS Arizona Memorial – I think it was – some Japanese tourists were basically making fun of events, yelling “Banzai!” etc.

I tried very hard to call in, but couldn’t get through.  Eventually, not long before the end of the show, I resorted to sending them a fax.  Fortunately someone at the station saw it, and got it to the host, and he read it on the air before the show ended.

If you encounter people like that, the thing to do is hold up your camera, set off the flash, yell “BOOOOOMMMM!!!!” and cackle.

During High School, I also took a computer class at the community college where the instructor referred to it as “sharp” from the music nomenclature.

But “pound” is far more common, and I always thought #metoo was unintentionally ridiculous.

I heard a, maybe apocryphal, story with a similar setup. This ending had a veteran walking over and handing the Japanese tourists a can of Campbell’s cream of mushroom soup.

Might be too subtle, especially for tourists who may not be very familiar with English.

The musical sharp is actually slightly different from the pound sign; it’s angled significantly to the left.

I listen to so many great podcasts that I sometimes get them confused – but I think this is the one where you guys called Trumps tweet about going back to their home countries “racist”.  And this is when you all sound like DC insiders…most normal people never think of race when they read those – they think of lots of other stuff but not race.  This is the rot in our intellectual class – they have accepted the leftist assumptions about race and agree that racism is everywhere.  Trump is many terrible things, but these tweets just never give me a racist vibe.

And clearly we need a constitutional amendment that no one can be elected to federal office that was not born in the US.
