The Golden Age of Misanthropy

Live (well, live on MP3). from their primary domiciles, it’s the mighty GLoP podcast! This week, a trip back to days of show biz past as the GLoP-heads revisit (warning: you may want to sit down before you read the next few sentences) the long lost Jerry Lewis Show, which ran for 5 episodes in 1984. Also, who was Joe Franklin and why was he on TV? We answer that question for you.  Also, will the movie theater business (and the live show business at large) survive COVID-19? We discuss. And when will this all be over? And what about the kids (specifically, John and Jonah’s kids)? Finally, the guys discuss what they are watching with all of their free time.

The Incredibles!(the most important movie yet made in the 20th Century)

So it’s still possible to make a movie in the 20th Century. This is fantastic news.

The Incredibles is, indeed, a joy; but that was somebody else who praised it:  a bit excessively, I think!

And from Jonah we get in this podcast “that guy from Breaking Bad,” and a week ago it was “the costume designer in The Incredibles!(the most important movie yet made in the 20th Century) These aren’t arcana – these are stars of the biggest hits in both television and movies.

This is the GLoP Culture podcast. Isn’t it supposed to deliver insightful commentary on the GLoPular culture?

Yeah, you go ahead and flip us all off, Goldberg of GLoP Culture.

It’s a podcast, not a trivia contest. And you clearly knew exactly who he was talking about.

Wait, Scott – if GLoP Culture is a podcast and not a trivia contest, are you going to criticize JPod for continually expressing his retention of movie arcana? Or maybe criticize those Ricochet subscribers who praise JPod for doing so on the GLoP Culture podcast that is not a trivia contest?

Am I the only one whose high school English teachers said “don’t you dare tell me ‘you know what I’m talking about?’”

Also. The Incredibles is a terrific movie, a top 3 Pixar movie. But “the most important movie yet made in the 20th Century?” * No, not even in the top 10.

Are you sure we’re talking about the same The Incredibles! movie? The one I’m talking about was once described on the GLoP Culture podcast-not-a-trivia-contest by John Podhoretz as “a perfect movie.” The Incredibles! effectively and indelibly delivers to viewers of every age – especially including children – the message

Saying “everyone is special” is the same thing as saying “no one is special.”

    That’s important.

    * 21st Century, not the 20th Century – the original poster regrets the error.

I said it was a top 3 Pixar movie. But it most certainly is not the most important movie of the 20th century and it’s silly to claim that for the 21st century (even if you qualify it with “yet made”) now as we are only 1/5th of the way into it.

And not being able to recall something on the fly on a live podcast is not a measure of anything. That John can do it is great. But that’s his super power. And it’s freaky, quite frankly. I love it, but it is freaky.

My friend’s grandparents’ house is in the shot when Napoleon Dynamite attempts (and fails) the sidewalk bike jump. Just pointing out the GLoPpers aren’t the only ones with movie location claims to fame.

Did JPod start to say “Maybe you (Dr Birx) have a servant that can go to the grocery store for you, but I don’t” or “but the rest of us don’t” and then changed it because he realized he DOES have a servant (maybe an intern, whatever) that can go to the grocery store for him?

Lol. JPod has a servant. LOL.

I love John more every time I hear him. I bemoan the frequent criticism of him, which is often based upon accusations of his dominating the discussion or interrupting, etc. (especially on the COMMENTARY PODCAST). I say NOT GUILTY to that. My views on President Trump are completely opposite of John’s, I daresay, but he is so intelligent and articulate that I always enjoy him. His retention of movie arcana is wonderful, as is his unwavering support of Israel ( “Keep the candle burning”, his exit line on the COMMENTARY PODCAST, is the best signoff in all of “poddom”. I’ll bet his father is very proud of him.

Agreed. Though John and I share a similar view of POTUS. GLoP should have been named SPOILER ALERT!! for John’s enthusiastic retellings.

I don’t know if JPod has servants, but if you listen to the Commentary podcast, you know he has lackeys.

Also, given what the Democratic Party has become, constantly undermining the Republican President makes you a strange “supporter” of Israel — as the Israelis understand even if JPod doesn’t.

“Intellectuals” and “experts” frequently only have a very limited comprehension, if any at all, of things outside their narrow specialty.

Hi – Lubavitcher here. A little late to this, but anyway – loved hearing Rob talk about the Chabad Telethon. One important correction though. The host of the Chabad telethon Rob mentioned, who (apparently) said “let’s make 6 million a good number for the Jews,” is Rabbi Shlomo Cunin, director of Chabad of California, who’s a great guy, quite a character, and also most definitely NOT the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

Oh, and another thing – the Chabad telethon has had many many “celebrity gentiles” on over the years – Carroll O’Connor and Matt LeBlanc come to mind – although John Voight is unique in probably being the only celebrity gentile to ever give a Jew a crash course on Chasidism on national television.
