The Golden Age of Misanthropy

Live (well, live on MP3). from their primary domiciles, it’s the mighty GLoP podcast! This week, a trip back to days of show biz past as the GLoP-heads revisit (warning: you may want to sit down before you read the next few sentences) the long lost Jerry Lewis Show, which ran for 5 episodes in 1984. Also, who was Joe Franklin and why was he on TV? We answer that question for you.  Also, will the movie theater business (and the live show business at large) survive COVID-19? We discuss. And when will this all be over? And what about the kids (specifically, John and Jonah’s kids)? Finally, the guys discuss what they are watching with all of their free time.

WOR Ch. 9 was Million Dollar Movie, the Mets, Knicks and Rangers, and Joe Franklin for most of the 1960s through the early 80s because they were by far the cheapest of NYC’s independent stations. But their sports programming got them uploaded for a while as a Superstation when cable/satellite TV came vogue, like Ted Turner’s WTBS or WGN in Chicago, because they were desperate for programming. So there was a brief period in the late 70s and early 80s that viewers in places like Lubbock or Tucson could enjoy the bizarre nostalgia goings on of Joe Franklin (and the show just fit in with WOR’s old studio at the seedy south end of Times Square; it wasn’t quite the same when the FCC forced them to move to New Jersey).

Perhaps it was Mussolini who set the example for Tony Curtis by having a “mistress/biographer”, although Curtis topped him by having two.

I was thinking more Harry Carey. Rob should have guzzled a Bud and sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”  three-quarters of the way through the podcast.

So if sports open back up this summer, do we get a GLoP or Ricochet Podcast with Rob doing a shirtless remote from the outfield bleachers at Wrigley?

Did JPod start to say “Maybe you (Dr Birx) have a servant that can go to the grocery store for you, but I don’t” or “but the rest of us don’t” and then changed it because he realized he DOES have a servant (maybe an intern, whatever) that can go to the grocery store for him?

Rob doesn’t have “zero unread emails” because he’s read them all.  It’s because SaneBox moved them somewhere else, so they don’t show up in the Inbox count.  But they’re still unread.

Nope. He’s maniacal about inbox zero and has been for a long time (we’ve been arguing about it for at least a decade).

He’s also been an acolyte of David Allen’s Getting Things Done program for years, long before SaneBox came along (and he’s been using SaneBox for years too).

If you’re saying that Commentary Magazine doesn’t have any interns, etc, then why didn’t he just keep saying “but I/the rest of us don’t?”  It sure sounded like he had a short pause and then changed what he was going to say.

But maybe I’m just sensitive, because some of these people could spend more per month on coffee at Starbucks etc, than my entire monthly income.  I’ve actually heard some of them talking about spending more than my monthly income, on Broadway theater tickets.

I love John more every time I hear him. I bemoan the frequent criticism of him, which is often based upon accusations of his dominating the discussion or interrupting, etc. (especially on the COMMENTARY PODCAST). I say NOT GUILTY to that. My views on President Trump are completely opposite of John’s, I daresay, but he is so intelligent and articulate that I always enjoy him. His retention of movie arcana is wonderful, as is his unwavering support of Israel ( “Keep the candle burning”, his exit line on the COMMENTARY PODCAST, is the best signoff in all of “poddom”. I’ll bet his father is very proud of him.

Last year, there was some stuff in the news about the house from The Brady Bunch getting a “makeover.”  That is, the house whose EXTERIOR is shown as their home.  But that actual house, the interior wasn’t like the set they used to show them inside the house.  What the “makeover” did, was turn that house into the same house we saw on the inside, too.  It was interesting to read about.

Maybe you hear something shady when JPod restructures a sentence in mid-sentence, but I, you know, 25,000 GLoP listeners find it quite normal, especially in someone who thinks fast, talks a lot, and wants to make clear, powerful arguments.

Maybe.  But if it’s true that “the rest of us don’t,” why not just say that?  Does he think “the rest of us don’t” know how many people there are in the US?

Astroturf was mentioned.  Actually they got the old kind, to be authentic.  They also replaced some kind of tree visible in the front yard, which had been removed since the show.  It was some kind of very rare import thing, but they were able to find another home nearby that had one, and the owner there was happy to let them have it to restore The Brady House.

The main issue, though, was that the house shown from outside apparently didn’t have a second floor at all, let alone one with the bathrooms, bedrooms, and stairway to the attic which later in the show became Greg’s room.  So they actually added a second floor without changing how it looked from the outside, somehow.

I’m sure there are a lot of stories about it online, including many photos.

If we need additional evidence of Jonah’s wrongheadedness, it can be found in his defense of Star Trek: Discovery.

We’ve been catching up with this — only the last episode remains to be watched — on the CBS All-Access 30-day free trial.

The first season, with the great Jason Isaacs front and center, left us an overall positive expression — though I admit I treated the interminable, subtitled Klingon sequences as if they were commercials, opportunities for snacking and bathroom visits.

But the second season has been a hard slog, with an ever-mounting level of stupidity.  As my companion, one of those people who have seen every episode of every series multiple times, says, “Nobody is paying attention!”  That is, the show runners don’t seem to care if the stories make sense or not.

To replace the first season’s interminable Klingon scenes, the second season gives us even more interminable scenes of people talking about their feelings.  “You’re goddamn military people, suck it up!“ I often feel like shouting.

One of the show‘s unintentional laugh lines is when a superior officer says, “And that’s an order!“  Nobody obeys orders on the show, and there are never any consequences: even if you held people at gunpoint.

Gene Roddenberry, a World War II combat veteran, must be turning in his grave.  Or he would be, if the friction hadn’t reduced his remains to ashes years ago!
