As promised, here’s the GLoP Game of Thrones season 7 recap podcast with special guests New York Times columnist (and National Review movie critic) Ross Douthat and The Washington Free Beacon’s Sonny Bunch sitting in for the Game-less Rob Long. Need less to say, this show contains wall-to-Northern Wall spoilers as well as arcana and details that only people who actually live in Westeros or die hard Thrones fans will appreciate. That said, if you watch the show and want to hear some smart guys geek out about it, then this podcast is for you. Winter is here.

I’m quite sure there will be something like that on the next GLoP.
Jonah Goldberg says that the New York Times is a “great newspaper”. Oh, to have a conservative elite that shunned the NYT and NPR the way they shun Breitbart!
He talked about the NYT in his daddy’s day.
This was an enjoyable episode even if you don’t watch GOT. I was amused to note that even though I’ve never seen the show and only made it about 2/3 of the way through the first book*, I was still able to follow along with most of the plot lines they discussed. That tells me that GRRM does a good job of setting them up but clearly can’t close the deal on them. (He does seem to get effective closure on many of his characters though.) The podcast does a good job of summing up why I never could get into the story – there’s no one to root for. (I refuse to pull a Sonny Bunch and always root for the bad guys.)
*I’ve tried more than once to read Game of Thrones, which makes the book unique. I probably finish 90% of the books I start (and I read a lot), and the ones I quit I rarely give a second chance. I’ve started GOT no less than three times. It’s well written, and has everything I normally like in a book with one exception: giving me an emotional attachment to the characters. The soul-crushing despair and constant “The worst is yet to come!” attitude is just not fun.
Technically, he doesn’t root for the bad guys, he just doesn’t consider them the bad guys.
Why do we always come here?
I guess we’ll never know
It’s like a kind of torture
To have to watch the show…
I believe this came up on the podcast, but the more I think about it, the more dumb-founded I am by the Cersei plot-line.
We are supposed to believe that the woman who:
Received no opposition and suffered no political consequences when she subsequently crowned herself Queen despite having no plausible claim on the crown, even to the point of renouncing her married name and crowning herself as Cersei Lannister, implicitly confessing her sin with Jaime and her children’s bastardy (and then openly sleeping with Jaime).
This is not only nuts, but counter to everything the show once stood for.
I’ve read the five books and watched only season 1 of the show, but I enjoyed this podcast. The first three books were really solid, but the next two read like a holding action until he could get everyone in place for the plot to resume. It’s too bad he’ll likely never finish it, and if he does, not be able to do so in one more book. My understanding was that this series was supposed to be a sort of anti-“Wheel Of Time”, in that it was supposed to have an arc that was resolved in a single-digit number of books. I thought he originally thought he could do it in three (if only.)
As to the complaints, my understanding is that this is a bonus ep., so it doesn’t affect the normal output of the show. And I don’t think anyone mentioned either Trump or the American south, so be of good cheer.
You were missing a more clear warning. Try this next time.

FOR NOW, WE ARE ONLY GEEKING OUT ABOUT A STUPID TV SHOW.
Liked just for getting the all-caps typing through the censors.
What a great, fun podcast! I’d been holding off listening because I only managed to watch the last GoT episode last night.
If the season finale wasn’t worth the wait, this podcast was!
I’d rather listen to a whole episode on corn hole. As a counterbalance, maybe y’all should dedicate a future episode to Jane Austen/Regency era culture and its timeless relevance.
That would be *AWESOME*!
Especially if you could get the Substandard guys to join you as guests for an extra special episode – substandard glop uncensored.
Be careful what you wish for….
This has been discussed, and it may well happen at some point. Would have to be done in person and that probably won’t happen anytime in the near future.
I’ll pay cash to listen to that one.
