I’m Walken Here

Now arriving on track 12, the second attempt at recording this podcast (to hear the version that got sidelined by a fender bender, stick around to the end of the closing music, which is Walken’s and Fat Boy Slim’s Weapon of Choice.)  In this week’s episode, we cast the inevitable Anthony Scaramucci movie, who is the most conservative character on TV, and what movie needs a sequel? The answers may surprise you.

    Pretty great photoshop, EJ.

Jonah with that hair looks a bit like Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor.  (and isn’t his name Gene in that sketch, as well?)

John predicted that Scaramucci would be fired before the podcast could be posted. Fellas, take Podhoretz to Vegas.

Wow!  Listened to this streaming off the site, and when it was over and I clicked on the Member Feed, the first headline I see is Mooch fired.

THIS must be the Master Plan of the administration: “Nice try parodying us, because by the time you think of it, we’ve already done it ourselves.”

The Flying Nun had a crucifix on her Rosary that the Order wears around its waist.

JPod remarks: “Movies with James Brolin tended not to be very good.”

In partial defense of Mr. Streisand, check out the overlooked 1981 Stewart Rafill heist film High Risk, where Brolin leads a band of blue-collar amateurs who set out to rob a Colombian drug lord (James Coburn), which naturally goes awry, and get mixed up with a semi-competent rebel band (led by Anthony Quinn) as they try to get back to their rendezvous point and be rescued by a pair of hippie smuggler pilots. Lindsay Wagner in a great turn. Highly recommended.

That was brilliant all around, including the most dramatic podcast ending I’ve ever heard — reminiscent of Kim Wexler driving off the road in Better Call Saul. It’s too bad you put the spoilers at the beginning, otherwise you could have ended abruptly and added a teaser voice over:

“Next week…on GLoP–  Rob checks his fender damage, but fails to check his privlege…”

Jonah: “Ever since the accident you’ve been…different!”

“Plus, John has a new ‘friend’ — with an embarassing secret. Be sure to tune in…”

I think the wakefulness drug that John was thinking of is modafnil, which is also on the market for “shift work sleep disorder”. But if memory serves, it was originally developed for fighter pilots on alert for long periods of time without sleep.

I would suggest it for our president but it is technically in the amphetamine family and I don’t think he needs that.

Maurice J Minnifield, the astronaut in Northern Exposure, was a sympathetic, explicitly conservative character.

Also: William Shatner as Hillary Clinton.

Speaking of The Flying Nun, Rich Little appeared as a monk, Brother Paul, and Paul Lynde starred in an episode as Father Lundigan. (Ricochet members under the age of 50 now Googling Rich Little and Paul Lynde).

Everyone knows Ned Flanders is a Leftie.

(How can you mention Cannon, Longstreet, Barnaby Jones and yet not Ironside?)

On the show Blackish, they regularly go to church. In current pop culture African Americans are allowed to be Christians without being freaks.

Westworld is the exception that proves the James Brolin Bad Film Rule.

For those who wonder why a podcast where Christopher Walken is mentioned ends with a Fatboy Slim song, allow me to introduce you to a truly incredible music video:

Nuvigil also works well, and I think it can be used for extended periods of time.

Oh, and one more vote for Hank Hill as the best exemplar of a conservative on T.V. (at least in the animated division.) He is conservative both by temperament and actual politics, as when he was torn as to whether he could vote for George W. Bush (whom he was otherwise an enthusiastic supporter of), because he delivered a very weak handshake to Hank.

Allusions to “blowing one’s wad” doesn’t violate the conduct code?

    Noted.

Unless that could mean something other than what I know it to mean- but don’t do a google image search to find out.

It goes back to musketry, wherein someone would fire the musket before loading the ball, thus “shooting one’s wad”, or “blowing one’s wad.” It was fairly innocuous until about 20 years ago, when the other association took hold, and is probably ineradicable in the public’s mind now. But this is Ricochet, and not the public, so maybe we should try to reclaim it.

Here you can find the leadership team of the Springfield Republican Party.  Dr. Higgert is a sympathetic character.  Mr. Burns is not.

I guess none of the GLoP guys watch “Blue Bloods.” I think Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan is a terrific example of a conservative on TV, and he’s portrayed in an unfailingly positive way. It’s probably the most politically balanced show on network TV, in that it tends to present multiple points of view, all of them fairly, and doesn’t try to tell the viewer what to think.

Well, as I’m sure Rob would tell you, cultural elites don’t watch the low brow stuff they peddle on CBS.
