A Micro Dose of GLoP

It’s the end of the year, the eve of the debut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the start of the primary season. That means the men of GLoP must fire up their Skype and bring their punditry skills to bear.

This month, a mediation on what it means to be a member of the “establishment.” Suffice to say, it has a very different meaning than it did 40 years ago. Also, some thoughts about guns, predictions and hopes for The Force Awakens, choices for the best of 2015, and Rob’s medication of choice for the new year. Tune in, turn on, and drop out. See in 2016 for our live show in New Hampshire on February 6th.

Judge Mental: But… I still don’t think Star Wars is based on A Princess of Mars any more than it is based on Tarzan.

Uh, I don’t know. One look at Han and the Wookie…

So you’re saying Han is the ugliest Wookie in the galaxy? ;-)

The civilization of the red race of Mars was very much based on Europe and her monarchies. Some were more like Britain, the constitutional monarchy. Others were absolutist.

That was my take… Helium and the other one could be seen as similar to England and France during, say, the 18th century.

Edit: I mean that in the sense of two, powerful rivals fighting multiple wars over time.

BTW, the chimp’s name is Cheetah.  Cheetah – Chewbacca.  Coincidence?  I don’t think so.

Glad you’re coming around to my way of thinking.

Peter Meza:Star Wars was based on “Only Angels Have Wings” from 1939? Is that true? Has anyone seen this movie and compared the two? If so, what did you think?

I’m pretty sure it was based on The Hidden Fortress from 1958.

The two companions & the fortress Mr. Lucas took from the Kurosawa movie, but what else?

Obi Wan is based on the Toshiro Mifune character. The princess in danger. the bad guy is essentially Darth Vader. Etc etc etc.

The princess in danger is also a pain in the butt.  Although not as much as the Lady MacBeth character in Throne of Blood.  I only wish Lucas had told the thing from the point of view of the robots, which to my mind would have been the good steal.   They’d have sold 10s of tickets with that.

A friend when Star Wars came out had the theory that the helmets were a lift from Alexander Nevsky.  As would be having a first-class composer do the score.  Which reminds me of a useful movie-making tip: never get Igor Stravinsky to score your film.  He’ll hand in the score before you start production and tell you to build the damned picture around it (which supposedly is the reason Four Norwegian Moods isn’t in Commandos Strike at Dawn).

I am among those members who would be delighted to have more frequent GLoP Culture podcasts…Much of the Americana is lost on me, but the political insights and the good humor are a delight. Ah, but learned students of comparative religion the triumvirate is not. A few years ago, when mention was made of Charlie Brown’s Christmas, it was suggested that Linus reads from the Gospel According to St. Mark. No, Mark, like John, has no nativity narrative. And, no, Rob Long, Islam does not teach that Maryam, as she is called, was born free of original sin. That’s Catholic doctrine. Muslims don’t believe in original sin anyway, but they do affirm the virgin birth, strangely enough…If the Christians are right in claiming that at the end of time every knee will bend at the name of Yeshua, I do indeed hope that we can all enjoy a highball thereafter. And if the Christians are wrong on that matter, it seems only fair that they should treat their Jewish friends to fine Chinese food and a movie. Oh, and if we’re all wrong, and Mary’s son is indeed leading those out to zap the infidels, I for one will ask for sweet and sour pork–and two highballs. As we say in Japanese, if one is to take poison, one might as well swallow the serving dish too.

    Titus Techera:

    Complete hogwash.

Titus has it right here all around.  Only resemblance is in the loosest sense that the Han Solo character has a kind of free-wheeling pilot quality that is found in the Hawks film.  Incidentally, Only Angels Have Wings is a truly fantastic film from a truly fantastic (and versatile) director.  Shockingly good, actually.
