Ha!! I’m an elementary teacher, and you guys are right on!! The really smart kids always want to know how to get the right answer. They’re learning how to do what you’ve talked about. When we use this stupid “cite the text” emphasis without actually reading for meaning, they lose out on so much joy and love! One way I combat this is to read books I love aloud to my students, just for the love of the book. There are no tests, no quizzes, no responses required. I want them to learn to love books.
