Again…Twitter hardly matters to anyone else except that small circle of News Talkers. I have been unable to watch news for several years because it basically is people sitting around talking about what other people said on Twitter. Seriously?
Also, these people clearly don’t know a lot of folks in the military. The officer corps is normally much more conservative than enlisted soldiers. And there are t a ton of Ivy League people joining up unless they come from a military family or already lean right.
I recall a survey of active duty army officers from around 2008 that showed they identified with the Democrats 18% of the time, considered themselves unaffiliated 22% of the time, leaving the Republican number at 60%.
Another survey around the same time found:
about two-thirds of majors and higher-ranking officers identify as conservative, as previous studies found. … only 32 percent of the Army’s enlisted soldiers consider themselves conservative, while 23 percent identify as liberal and the remaining 45 percent are self-described moderates.

A 2017 study shows some shifting to the left has occurred:
Fifty-four percent of officers identified as Republicans, while twenty-four percent said they were Democrats, with fourteen percent identified as independents. … Only forty-seven percent of those polled considered themselves conservative, 32 percent said they were moderate, while 22 percent identified as liberal. Previous surveys have shown as many as 65 percent of officers identifying as conservatives.

On the one hand, soldiers tend to be patriotic, which pulls them one way politically; but they are also government employees, which pulls them the other way.
