John’s absolutely correct about the need to re-think the allowable age for gun ownership. I had no idea the voting age was only lowered in 1972. There’s also no contradiction between 18 year olds serving in the military and not being able to purchase guns until age 21. People have lost the ability to make distinctions and see differences.
When I hear a policeman is accused of some wrongdoing, my instinct is to give the policeman the benefit of the doubt. This is because police are the ones who “run towards the danger” and so are willing to put themselves at risk to protect others. But stories like what happened in Texas and Florida cut back on this instinct.
John Podhoretz is moving in the direction of a modified Heinlein doctrine – only people who have honorable discharges from the US Armed Services can own firearms.
