On the first podcast of the week, the COMMENTARY crew (Abe Greenwald, Noah Rothman, and John Podhoretz) ventilate upon the White House invitation extended to Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, who has openly acknowledged his participation in extra-legal assassinations in his country’s drug war. Why is such a person being ushered into the Oval Office? Also, we wonder whether the Democratic Party will be in the proper condition to score the kinds of victories in 2018 and 2020 it clearly believes are inevitable. Give a listen.

There is an error in the podcast… Hillary Clinton’s “Basket of Deplorables”  wasn’t a mistake, or a hot-mike indecent leaked to the press. It was in her speech – that she gave in front of one of her largest crowds and the media. It was in no way similar to Mitt Romney’s “47%” comments, that where illicitly recorded, and leaked.

It wasnt a gaff (A gaff being caught on tape speaking the truth) it was a premeditated (and presumably focus group tested) line of her campaign. In short she meant it, and meant to mean it.

Thanks Occupant! Don’t let them re-write history. The Democrats are bad people, and they mean every word that they say about us. But as bad as they are, the #DNCLeaks proved that they say even worse things about us when the microphones are off.

I dont think it was an attempt to re-write history. I think they incorrectly remembered the details of her speech, and that led them to falsely equate it to Romney’s “47%” commentary. Which should contain several lessons for candidates. 1) With cell phones recording everything – everything said in public is recorded. 2) While you’re a candidate, don’t commit random acts of punditry.

Hillary’s speech should be the tombstone on her campaign – in the same way Howard Dean’s crazy scream killed his – both played well to the partisan audience in the room – but on TV to the general public it just looked awful.

Was it @noahrothman who wondered who the disenfranchised will be in 2020 – reasonable, intellectual moderates? I was thinking the same thing. I wonder what those rallies will look like? https://youtu.be/gT9xuXQjxMM

It’s time for a full-on grumpy, get-off-my-lawn, old person comment: per the Romney staffer “Etch-a-Sketch” comment, why oh why did non-press secretary staffers get to start commenting in the media to begin with? I remember exactly when it started happening in the early 90s. I can’t believe modern Republicans let their people get away with it.

I agree. The campaign staff should be kept as quiet as possible. You’re right about the dating of this trend. I think cable news outlets begin saturation coverage of a single story. They begin to look for interview subjects to fill air time – and as time goes on – they become more and more tangential to the story. I imagine in the next election cycle – they’ll be interviewing the caterers.
