On this week’s podcast, Abe Greenwald and John Podhoretz survey the bad polling news for Hillary Clinton in the wake of the release of her FBI interview and what a race between two extremely unpopular people might mean in November.

We wonder at Donald Trump’s insistence on enlarging a military he does not wish to use, and wonder how he can reconcile all that with his promise to destroy ISIS. And we do not forget how the president was dissed in Asia. Give a listen.

While I tend to agree with a lot of what was said, I will also say that I haven’t been to the polls for a Presidential election in an enthusiastic fashion for a number of cycles. I have voted for the lesser of two evils or at least the least annoying of the two. This year I am appalled at the possibility of Clinton and disgusted with the possibility of Trump, but I shall go to the polls and vote. ugh.

I listened to John and Abe today and this is what I noticed.

They spent several minutes near the end of the podcast reviewing the horrible Iran deal and all of the violations and side-deals which are just coming to light. They bemoaned the fecklessness, delusion and incompetence of the Obama team that negotiated it.

There is a candidate for president who has made it a theme of his campaign that the United States is led by incompetents and idiots, by fools who allow this country to be taken to the cleaners in every negotiation we enter into with the resolute and crafty leaders of other countries. It has been one of this candidate’s signature messages for months.

Neither John nor Abe mentioned that candidate’s name in connection with the Iran deal, or remarked how the deal illustrated the truth of what this candidate has been saying…even though the connection is easy to make.

This is where NeverTrumpism gets you, that even when you attack the people who are endangering America you cannot praise the man who has been making that argument – simply because you have sworn not to support him.

The man who must not be named with praise. It’s the first commandment of the nevertrumpers.

That would require praising an even worse incompetent. What would be the point? I’m not sure Trump wouldn’t have blundered into the same or an even worse deal had he been the President. In fact I think it’s likely.

Trump misdiagnoses the problem, and attacks things that aren’t a problem. The problem is with Obama and his team, and their political/foreign policy views, specifically. Pointing that out is great. Commentary has been doing that for a long time. Trump’s message – against not only the Iran deal, but also NAFTA and other free trade deals, as well as NATO and other defense treaties – does nothing for me.
