Great point, not being made enough, that RBG’s life was a testament to the American Experience.
The vacancy should be filled immediately – without delay, as this election is going to be contested, the court needs to be fully staffed. Considering the ages (and in a pandemic) of the justices, the administration should have binders full of appointees ready to roll should a vacancy occur. I dont mind if the Trump Administration gives a few days grace for the funeral services – but as soon as thats over, they should have an appointment ready to go.
Haven’t vetted anyone? Carramba! Just bump up the candidates from the Kavannaugh list! Fast! Now! Is this so hard? I thought Trump was all about thinking outside the box.
Sen. McConnell’s principle stated in 2016 may indeed be an insincere, Talmudic smokescreen for naked political calculation, as JPod & Co. suggest, but his statements then were more precise than they give him credit for, and his handling of this vacancy is consistent with what he said then: https://www.republicanleader.senate.gov/newsroom/research/get-the-facts-what-leader-mcconnell-actually-said-in-2016. A rare lapse from the Commentary podcast, which in the last six months has become one of my principal windows on the world!
